Special Education Preschool Coach

The position of Special Education Preschool Coach exists to collaboratively support needs-based learning and professional growth of Special Education educators for the purpose of enhancing knowledge, skills, dispositions, and well-being of all educators and students. We do this through building supportive relationships so teachers can incorporate content-specific best practices to impact student engagement, provide equitable learning opportunities for students, and identify areas for professional growth.
Under the direction of the Special Education Department, the Special Education Coach facilitates teacher improvement through relationship and student-centered coaching practices. In addition, the coach partners with subject area specialists, the curriculum team, and the Special Education Coordinator of professional development to design effective professional learning targeted to teaching and learning resources, classroom practices, and training in Special Education law and responsiblities.
Essential Functions:
  • Support SPED Preschool special class and inclusion lead teachers through classroom visits, professional development opportunities, and as needed in providing appropriate services for all students.
  • Provide training and support on academic and social/emotinal assessment tools.
  • Provide Special Education support such as training/intervention ideas for differentiating curriculum, managing behavior challenges, working at developmentally appropriate levels, and other related issues.
  • Collaborate with coordinators, coaches and SpEd teachers to develop and deliver professional development.
  • Attend,support, and help facilitate Special Education student meetings (IEP's) and serve as the Local Educational Agency (LEA).
  • Monitor IEPs and Special Education folders for compliance as they take place.
  • Audit sampling of Special Education files for compliance yearly, UPIPS monitoring as needed.
  • Provide frequent and regular coach support for struggling teachers through discussion, modeling, and professional development. /
  • Support teachers in developing instructional skills (eg. teacher clarity, learning targets & success criteria, pacing, and effective correction/feedback for students.)
  • Support teachers in purposefully designing and creating unit and daily lessons; develop content scope & sequence maps, develop formative and summative assessments to measure student progress and guide instruction.
    Attend all IEPs in your area serving as the LEA (Inclusion Preschools and Foundations).
  • Monitor all IEPs and folders for compliance as they take place, ensuring that timelines are met.
  • Audit sampling of SpEd files for compliance yearly, UPIPS monitoring as needed.
  • Troubleshoot and answer questions about general classroom needs (i.e. budgets, copies, school items, unique challenges with students or parents, etc.) .
  • Balance priorities between multiple assignments to effectiely use existing resources to address mutlitple requests and needs.

Qualifications:
  1. Requires a current State of Utah teaching certificate (and that it be maintained throughout employment in this position).
  2. Requires a minimum of 4 years of classroom teaching experience.
  3. Evidence of proficiency in the effective classroom teaching practices, either through a Bachelor's or Master's degree in the content specific discipline.
  4. Requires the ability and willingness to work in all elementary school level settings.
  5. Requires the ability to collaboratively work in small and sometimes large groups.
  6. Requires effective interpersonal skills to coach and interact with individuals and groups at all organizational levels.
  7. Requires a deep understanding of curriculum, instruction, assessment, and the effective use of technology throughout.
  8. Requires an attitude of life-long learning and a willingness to try new teaching and learning methods and techniques.
  9. Requires the ability to model best teaching practices and familiarity with the implementation of problem/inquiry-based learning, cooperative learning, and student centered instructional practices.
  10. Requires basic knowledge of and experience using web-based systems including lCanvas, and MasteryConnect, in addition to other instructional, assessment, productivity, and multimedia software.
  11. Requires demonstrated competence in providing professional development to teachers and/or other school leaders.
  12. Requires a valid Utah Driver License.
