What You Will Do
We are seeking a Mechanical Technician to assist in the Development and Fabrication of custom electro-mechanical instrument assemblies for space-based applications. Previous experience with space-flight hardware is not a limiting factor. The ideal candidate enjoys meticulous hands-on tasks and is an enthusiastic learner!
The Intelligence and Space Research (ISR) Division at Los Alamos National Laboratory has been designing, building, and operating highly innovative space-based measurement and detection systems for over 60 years. Our work includes space-based measurement systems for verification of international nuclear treaties and scientific investigation. We lead experiments on NASA missions such as the Curiosity and Perseverance Mars Rovers, Van Allen Probes, and the Interstellar Boundary Explorer (IBEX). The Space Instrument Realization Group (ISR-5) provides engineering and technical expertise to develop and deploy high-quality, innovative measurement systems. ISR-5 is composed of electrical and mechanical technicians, technologists, and engineers; systems and quality engineers; technical project managers and other specialists who work on collaborative, diverse teams to deliver national security payloads and one-of-a-kind NASA instruments. Persons in this role will be responsible for developing and applying expert knowledge of high-reliability electrical components, circuits, assemblies, and systems.

Minimum Job Requirements:

Communication & Teaming
Ability to work independently as well as show enthusiasm for working in a team environment with coworkers from diverse technical backgrounds. This position will require collaboration with various team members to brainstorm and apply innovative solutions to complex and challenging technical problems. Demonstrated written and verbal communication, active listening, interpersonal, and organizational skills.
Technical
Experience and demonstrated skill in conducting research, investigating alternative solutions, and recommending solutions for problems affecting electronic or mechanical systems and/or equipment. Demonstrated experience handling delicate parts and instruments while performing mechanical inspection and assembly operations. Ability to read, understand, provide input/edit engineering procedures, drawings, layouts, and other related instructions.
Timeliness
Experience working and delivering products on schedule while being involved in multiple projects having various competing priorities. Ability to learn and be mentored to complete job functions as part of a team and execute tasks independently.
Education/Experience: Position requires an Associates Degree and a minimum of 3 years relevant experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
  • Experience in hand soldering and electronics fabrication of intricate component assemblies.
  • Prototype machining using manual and CNC controlled lathes, milling machines, and wire EDM's.
  • Metal fabrication using hand tools, shears, and press breaks.
  • 3D printing experience utilizing CAD design software.
  • 3D modeling design software experience including SolidWorks and/or Creo.
  • Working knowledge of LANL procurement process.
  • Experience in Quality Assurance.
  • Proficient use of mechanical inspection practices and equipment including hand measurement tools, CMM's and Keyence inspection tools.
  • Knowledge of conformal coating processes.
  • Creating and editing assembly and test procedures.
  • Knowledge of aerospace industry, regulatory, or DOE/NNSA Complex codes and standards.
  • Experience working with and handling classified information.
  • Active Q clearance.

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
*Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
No Clearance: Position does not require a security clearance. Selected candidates will be subject to drug testing and other pre-employment background checks.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the required period of continuous service, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader.
