EXECUTIVE OPPORTUNITY
AN INVITATION TO APPLY FOR THE POSITION OF
SUPERINTENDENT OF SCHOOLS
SOUTH KINGSTOWN PUBLIC SCHOOLS
SOUTH KINGSTOWN, RI

The South Kingstown School Committee invites exceptional candidates to apply for the position of Superintendent of Schools.
South Kingstown is a seaside community in southern Rhode Island overlooking Block Island Sound with a coastline featuring beautiful beaches, salt ponds, and marshes. The community is home to the University of Rhode Island (URI) and includes as residents many members of the URI faculty and staff. A population of approximately 31,000 occupies a town of nearly eighty square miles, including the commercial villages of Wakefield and Peacedale, the seaside communities of Matunuck and Snug Harbor, and a significant number of working farms in West Kingston. In addition to the University, economic drivers include light industry, commercial fishing, tourism, and health care. South County Hospital and its affiliated medical offices are located in the village of Wakefield. Residents and tourists enjoy various restaurants and taverns, nearby golf courses, summer theatrical productions at the historic Theater-by-the-Sea, several museums, ten miles of beaches, and a host of marinas. The cities of Providence and Newport are within a thirty-mile radius.
According to the 2020 census, the population of 31,000 is 89% Caucasian, 3.7% Hispanic, 3.3% Asian, 2.4% African-American, and 1% Native American. The owner-occupied housing rate is 75.3%, and the median home price in 2022 was $467,000. South Kingstown celebrated the 300th anniversary of its incorporation in 2023 and has a long history of commitment to public education due in no small part to being the home of URI. South Kingstown students regularly place themselves in the top tier of Rhode Island in standardized tests, Advanced Placement participation and scores, and school accountability data. The 2024 budget was $62,000,000, and in June of 2023, the voters overwhelmingly rejected an attempt to reduce the school budget by $1.5 million by a margin of 4 to 1.
In May 2024, voters will be asked to approve a $150 million bond referendum to replace South Kingstown High School. The current plan calls for constructing a new high school on land adjacent to the existing school, along with an outdoor athletic complex on a separate campus. The targeted completion date is September 2027. The new superintendent would play a significant leadership role during the project.
The town is governed by a five-member elected Town Council that employs a town manager. The school department is governed by a seven-member elected school committee that chooses the Superintendent of Schools. The district comprises three elementary schools, a middle school, a high school, an administration building, a technology center, and a maintenance facility.
Schools and enrollment are as follows:
  • Matunuck Elementary School (K-5), located within walking distance of South Kingstown Town Beach, has an enrollment of 255
  • Peace Dale Elementary School (PreK-5) in the heart of town has an enrollment of 388
  • West Kingston Elementary (K-5) is adjacent to the University of Rhode Island and has an enrollment of 322
  • Broad Rock Middle School (Grades 6-8), also in the heart of town, has an enrollment of 543
  • South Kingstown High School (Grades 9-12) has an enrollment of 729

Note: In response to a decline in enrollment, the district closed Wakefield Elementary School and Curtis Corner Middle School in the summer of 2023.
The South Kingstown School District strives to be an equitable educational community that develops compassionate citizens by cultivating the head, heart, and hands of our students in a culture of excellence, where students become critical thinkers, artists and innovators, and confident learners who contribute to their community and the world. Its core values are a commitment to:
  • Holding student learning as its top priority
  • Fostering continuous improvement
  • Building a collaborative culture

South Kingstown students regularly score among the top schools in Rhode Island on standardized tests and school accountability criteria. Its schools are rated three stars or better on the Rhode Island School Report Card, with Matunuck School and South Kingstown High School earning four stars.
South Kingstown High School offers career and technical education programs in allied health, construction technology, computer science, studio art, and biomedicine. Students can choose from twenty-three Advanced Placement courses, and the College Board has recognized the school for its participation in and achievement in AP courses. The district prides itself on a comprehensive music and art curriculum that begins in elementary school and continues through high school. Students at all three levels can study band, chorus, and orchestra. The South Kingstown Rebel athletic teams compete in every sport offered by the Rhode Island Interscholastic League. They are regular contenders for middle and high school state championships.
The South Kingstown School Committee is prepared to offer a multi-year contract with a regionally competitive salary and benefits package to a future-focused leader with exceptional credentials, accomplishments, and promise. This position offers the opportunity to join a strong team and a district committed to excellence and continuous improvement.
