We are seeking a SOM Funds Flow Analystmanages the newly developed Funds Flow methodologies being implemented across the School of Medicine. The role will use data to maintain complex models which allocate costs and revenues across each of the SOM departments and drive analyses of key performance indicators that inform decisions around financial goals, objectives and performance. This role meets regularly with key stakeholders of the central School of Medicine and leaders from each of the 37 departments to ensure two-way communication for advocacy, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities and expectations.
Specific Duties & Responsibilities
Coordinates
- Meets regularly with finance directors for the basic science and clinical departments as well as the executive directors of the SOM finance verticals to continuously validate Funds Flow assumptions and revenue and expense allocations.
- Meets with administrative SOM units to ensure two-way communication to create advocacy for units, knowledge transfer, and a shared understanding of financial activities.
Applies
- Obtains knowledge on the units and their financial activities through regular meetings and communications to determine how to advocate for units during conversations with JHM and JHU.
Creates/Prepares/Develops
- Assists in the preparation of budgets, variance analyses, and related analyses for administrative units and aids other analysts on the team to prepare variance analyses for basic science and clinical departments, as necessary.
- Regularly gathers and synthesizes large amounts of data to reach results and formulate recommended actions.
Analyzes/Interprets
- Analyzes the financial activities of the units to assist in budget preparation and associated analyses.
- Uses data to inform recommendations that support critical financial business decisions.
- Extracts financial data from various accounting and information systems to perform related reviews.
Manages
- Manages the portfolio of administrative SOM units and the completeness and accuracy of their financial activities.
- Manages a database of programs and funding shared between JHM entities, which will include participating in the annual JHM budgeting process to ensure new, pending and terminating agreements are accurately reflected in the budget plans for the SOM and each department.
Problem Solving
- Advocates for administrative units to ensure they are receiving funding for their activities and can hire staff.
- Independently identifies departments and/or missions that are disproportionately impacted by the Funds Flow methodologies and may require adjustments.
Thinking Critically
- Monitors financial metrics performance, develops models and reports, and ensures two-way communications with administrative units to determine their financial performance and if a corrective action plan is warranted.
Trains/Communicates
- Ensures administrative units and department finance team members have the necessary information, skills, and support to perform their financial activities in accordance with the new Funds Flow principles.
Collaborates
- Partner with Director, Dean's Office, Other FP&A analysts; Administrative Units staff; SOM Department analysts and manager, JHM/JHU Budget, Central Finance, JHM/JHHS/JHU Finance
Special Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
- Ability to analyze data for budgeting, operations, auditing, accounts receivable, and reserve analysis.
- Advanced knowledge in the use of the Microsoft Office suite of applications.
- Experience with other data reporting tools.
- Strong customer service orientation and focus on details, accuracy and meeting pre-determined deadlines.
- Understanding of and commitment to the mission.
Minimum Qualifications
- Bachelor's Degree in Finance, Accounting, Business or a related field.
- Five years of progressively responsible financial and business operations experience, preferably in a large and complex organization.
- Advanced Excel skills, with demonstrated knowledge of Pivot tables, formulas and other functions required.
- Proven communication, organizational, and analytic skills in a complex organization.
- Additional education (master's in a related field) may substitute for required experience and additional related experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in research financial management and clinical department business operations.
- SAP accounting knowledge preferred.

Starting Salary Range: $72,600 - $127,000 Annually ($85,000 targeted; Commensurate with experience)
