Job Description
Solar Alternatives is seeking a Solar Design Engineer to support deployment of solar energy and energy storage systems in our service areas. The Solar Design Engineer is a critical team member responsible for preparing and submitting engineering support documentation, accurate work products, client and coworker communication, as well as interpretation of new energy system designs. Professionals with an intelligent creative technical mind and a love for detail will find this position highly rewarding. Advanced solar and microgrid design training is provided for qualified candidates.
Responsibilities
- Design residential and commercial PV Systems utilizing survey data
- Provide feedback to survey teams and design team to improve processes
- Perform in person surveys as necessary for complex systems requiring On-Site Engineer Inspections
- Create detailed instructions for installation crews with robust design principles
- Create electrical line drawings as necessary, including monitoring and communication systems.
- Perform design calculations related to string sizing, voltage drop, current capacity, overcurrent protection, and wire sizing to meet code compliance and best practice
- Produce draft construction bill of materials
- Work with outside engineering firms to for PE stamps and certifications
- Create layouts for proposals for prospective clients
- Support process improvement and scaling efforts alongside company and team growth
- Technical design support for field staff as needed

Requirements
- Minimum high school diploma or equivalent; BS in engineering preferred
- Ability to work in a team environment as well as work independently
- Excellent written and verbal communication skills required
- Ability to work well with others in a collaborative team environment
- Computer proficiency (networking a plus)
- Ability to perform under pressure in a fast-paced environment
- Valid LA Driver’s License and clean driving record (for site visits)
- Regular, reliable, and predictable attendance required
- Proficient in the design of Solar PV systems
- Knowledge of electrical design theory and concepts as they apply to solar PV
- Experience in CAD, Aurora Solar, Helioscope preferred
- Knowledge of residential and commercial construction
- NABCEP Solar Design certification is preferred
