Job description

Chestnut solar, situated on 1,050 acres in Stratford, CA, features a solar photovoltaic (PV) power generation facility, battery energy storage system (BESS), and 230 kilovolt (kV) high voltage substation. With forty-six PV blocks, each equipped with a SunGrow SG3600UD inverter and thousands of solar panels on single-axis trackers, the PV facility boasts a power rating of 210 MW DC, capable of generating up to 150 MW AC. The BESS facility, comprising eight BESS blocks with Tesla Megapacks, offers a capacity of 135 MW AC and 540 MWh of storage, contributing to sustainable energy production and grid stability.

Opportunity Summary

The Solar Apprentice is tasked with assisting Solar Operations & Maintenance (O&M) Technicians in the day-to-day operations of a utility-scale solar project. Responsibilities encompass preventative and corrective maintenance, site inspections, reporting, vegetation management, and other general grounds keeping duties as directed by the O&M Supervisor.

Primary Duties

  • Conduct routine site tours to inspect equipment. Effectively communicate equipment condition to plant personnel and suggest improvements.
  • Perform routine preventive and predictive maintenance on all systems and equipment, including electrical equipment inspections, module replacement, and tracker lubrication. Support corrective maintenance under proper training or supervision.
  • Operate a variety of heavy equipment such as tractors, mowers, and variable reach forklifts.
  • Utilize various hand and power tools effectively.
  • Maintain cleanliness standards, including weed abatement and panel washing.
  • Escort contractors on-site as needed.
  • Adhere to all site safety requirements and procedures. Identify safety hazards and implement corrective actions when necessary.

Working Relationships

The Solar Apprentice reports directly to the O&M Supervisor and may take general direction from Site Manager.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions

Physical requirements include standing for extended periods of time, stair and ladder climbing, and routinely lifting up to 50 pounds. Protective equipment must be worn in the performance of some duties (e.g., hard hats, safety glasses, air masks, ear protection, chemical suits, hot gloves, and high voltage protective equipment, etc.). Work with hazardous materials may be required. There are extensive smoking restrictions in and around the facility.

Fitness for Duty

All employees will participate in the Fitness for Duty Program. This program includes a post-offer physical examination and drug screening and post-employment random drug screening.

Work Schedule

This position entails a Monday to Friday work schedule during regular day shift hours. Position also requires extended working hours and varied shifts with weekend and holiday work, as required by schedules, workload, and plant conditions.

Compensation

Initial compensation ranges from $24 to $26 per hour.

Job Qualifications

  • Ability to understand procedures and instructions specific to the area of assignment as would be acquired in four years of high school.
  • One year of industrial experience in operations and/or maintenance, with a specific focus on solar.
  • Keen attention to detail, as well as a commitment to following safety protocols and implementing corrective actions when necessary.
  • Eagerness to acquire skills in the electrical trade.
  • Strong mechanical aptitude and demonstrated proficiency in using basic hand tools.
  • Adaptability to changing situations and possess problem-solving skills to address issues efficiently while maintaining safety standards.
  • General understanding of computer systems.
  • Ability to comprehend and follow both written and verbal instructions.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication abilities to help ensure clear transmission of information and coordination with team members and external contractors.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid Drivers License at all times.
