We are looking for a Software Programmer to help with the development of a software system in support of an NSF Revolutionizing Engineering Department (RED) research grant. The system is envisioned to support performance tracking of students across a curriculum, multidimensional grade tracking (i.e. grading in multiple diverse categories such as "technical work", "communication skills", etc.), data integration with certain EdTech platforms (e.g. Gradescope, Perusall, Prairie Learn), and a dashboard-style data representation tool.
We are seeking to secure continued support for the position after the 2-year period if the work is successful. Funding for the position does go through August 31, 2025. The position will be fully integrated with Bucknell's Library and Information Technology division.
Job Duties:

- Conceptualize, design, develop and deploy tailored software solutions that align with the needs of the RED Grant and Pathways Program at Bucknell University.
- Craft high-quality, efficient, and testable code in one or more advanced development languages, showcasing ingenuity in tackling technical challenges and meeting development cycle goals within defined timeframes.
- Collaborate with grant stakeholders to refine program specifications and translate functional requirements into superior deliverables with minimal oversight.
- Engage in continuous collaboration with the L&IT team and other members of the Bucknell community to evaluate, refine, and influence the development best practices and patterns.
- Maintain, respect, and protect the confidentiality of information held within or transferred across the University's computer and communication resources in any format. Comply with university computing and data security standards.
- Provide technical support and maintenance services for products built as part of the grant.
- Perform other duties as assigned or requested.

Minimum Qualifications:

- Bachelor's degree in computer science or a related technical field and two years of experience OR Master's degree.
- Proficient in object-oriented design, data structures, and algorithms.
- Experience with data visualization and data analytics tools such as Cognos or Tableau, showcasing the ability to craft complex dashboards and visualizations from diverse data sources.
- Proficient in developing server-side solutions using one or more of the following development languages: Java, Kotlin, Python or equivalent .
- Experience with relational or NoSQL database environments, such as Oracle, MS SQL Server, or MongoDB. Familiarity with client-side MVC frameworks like Angular, React, Vue, or similar.
- Experience in the development and consumption of both REST and SOAP based Web Services.
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, coupled with excellent verbal, written, and interpersonal communication abilities to effectively articulate technical challenges and solutions.
- Proven experience in architecting solutions for complex projects, designing database architecture to support new applications, and effectively managing large-scale projects through all stages of the SDLC.
- Experience with agile development approaches, including CI/CD pipelines, unit testing, and iterative development.
- Familiarity with version control systems such as GitHub or GitLab and the ability to swiftly adapt to new tools and technologies.
- Be willing to respond to occasional emergency situations as they arise outside of normal working hours.
- Be willing to flex schedule for planned outages and upgrades as needed.

Preferred Qualifications:

- Familiar with math, probability and statistics.
- Experience with AWS technologies including Lambda, SNS, SQS, S3, CloudFormation
- Experience with container technologies such as Docker, ECS, or Kubernetes
- Master's degree in Artificial Intelligence is a plus.
- Strong comfort levels with Linux and command line tools
- Prior experience with Higher Education and/or EdTech.

Work Type: 

This is a full-time, staff exempt, benefits-eligible position.  This position is grant funded through August, 2025, and is renewable pending additional funding. We are seeking to secure continued support for the position if the work is successful.  This opportunity does allow for flexibility to engage in remote work.
This role is not budgeted for visa sponsorship at this time, all candidates must be authorized to work in the US at the time of submission of the application.

Salary Range:

This is a staff exempt position with a hiring range of $65,680 - 82,100 (E10). The offer rate will be based on a review of the candidate's credentials compared to the qualifications of the position, internal equity, and our overall compensation philosophy.

The Community
