About the Department
Organizational Unit
NC State University's ComTech, within the Office of Information Technology, provides data networking, cable television, and telecommunications services for the NC State campus community as well as managed telephony services to other UNC System organizations.
Communication Technologies engineers, deploys, and maintains campus-wide electronic communications systems that make it possible for NC State students, faculty, and staff to learn and work in an increasingly interconnected global community.
The responsibilities of the Systems & Development group, specifically, include the engineering and maintenance of a suite of unified communications services such as: Cisco IP telephony environment, Cisco Unity Connections Campus voice mail system, Call Center applications, PCR360, a telecommunications management system, and an array of collaboration tools. The group is responsible for system administration, network monitoring and management tools, and the development and support of custom software with a focus on automation.
Essential Job Duties
  • Staff Management - recruits, hires and supervises 5 developers. Develops work plans and mentors staff.
  • Serve as the prime contact and subject matter expert for all purchased, developed, and integrated tools used by ComTech to deliver network services to campus.
  • Learn and maintain a deep understanding of the complex dependencies of all of the tools and services used by ComTech to deliver network services to campus and provide guidance as to how changes to these tools and services will affect other dependent services and proactively identify potential conflicts or service affecting issues.
  • Project Management - coordinate resources and communicate with stakeholders related to major development projects.
  • Design and Development - translate business needs into functional and technical requirements. Designs applications and develop systems and solutions across the full development stack with a focus on user interface and user experience design.
  • Support - support and troubleshoot issues with production tools.

Other Responsibilities
  • Manages Software Development projects and development staff related to systems used to support the core services provided by ComTech including, but not limited to, Infrastructure Records, Business Services, Communications Services, and Network Services.
  • Meets with customers to gather requirements and create design prototypes. Develops project plans and tracks project status.

Qualifications
Minimum Education and Experience
  • Bachelor's Degree
  • 4+ years experience in web applications development using the LAMP stack
  • 4+ years hands on working with switching and routing in a large, complex enterprise network preferably using Cisco and Aruba technologies
  • Experience as a team lead serving as the external interface to the team
  • 1-2 years of supervisory experience

Other Required Qualifications
  • Analytical skills - solve complex problems involving reviewing and modifying source code and database structures.
  • Specialized computer/software experience - develop solutions and systems using a variety of platforms and languages including SQL, PHP, HTML, and JavaScript as well as several software libraries including Bootstrap and jQuery.
  • Hands on experience with routing, switching, and wireless technologies
  • Communication with internal or external customers
  • Project management
  • Supervisory experience - supervise and support 5 Software Development positions
