About MAG
The Maricopa Association of Governments (MAG) is a regional planning agency that develops solutions in areas such as transportation, air quality, economic development, and programs that meet the human needs of the region.
MAG serves a thriving region of more than 4 million people. Our members include 27 cities and towns, three Native American communities, Maricopa County and Pinal County. Our planning area encompasses more than 10,000 square miles. MAG is a council of governments and the designated metropolitan planning organization for transportation planning.
The Position
The Maricopa Association of Governments is seeking a qualified team-oriented Software and Database Development Intern to join our IT division. All applicants with relevant experience or coursework will be considered.
This position will assist in providing software development and Database support to MAG staff in a Microsoft Windows environment. This includes assessment of staff software development and Database needs followed by solution development and implementation in coordination with the IT Development Program Manager.
Specific duties may also include, but are not limited to:
  • C# Development: Collaborate with the development team to write, maintain, and enhance C# code for various software applications and services. Learn and apply best practices in C# development.
  • JavaScript Development: Assist in front-end development by working on JavaScript-based components and improving the user interface of web applications.
  • Software Testing: Participate in the software testing process, including creating test cases, performing manual testing, and documentation.
  • Microsoft SQL Server: Work directly with application databases to develop and optimize SQL queries, maintain the database schema, and troubleshoot database-related issues.
  • Git Version Control: Learn and follow version control practices using Git. Collaborate with the development team to manage code repositories and track changes.
  • Windows and IIS: Gain experience in Windows server administration and the configuration and management of Internet Information Services (IIS) for web applications.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain technical documentation, including code comments, user manuals, and process documentation.
  • Problem Solving: Assist in troubleshooting technical issues and work on resolutions under the guidance of senior developers and IT staff.
  • Learning and Growth: Proactively seek opportunities to learn and improve your skills in C#, Windows, IIS, JavaScript, unit testing, Microsoft SQL Server, and Git.
  • Other tasks as required by the IT Development Program Manager or Information Technology Manager.

The Candidate
The ideal candidate will be highly motivated, able to work independently, handle multiple tasks, and detail oriented. Critical thinking and a keen interest in finding ways to do better are a necessity for the position.
Education:
Working on a post-high school degree or equivalent experience
Technology Skills:
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Windows
  • Proficiency in business productivity software including Microsoft Office
  • Experience with web development, specifically HTML, JavaScript, ASP, and .NET
  • Experience programming C# database applications and user interfaces with Visual Studio
  • Experience programming client-side applications with Javascript and jQuery.
  • Knowledge and experience with Microsoft SQL Server Database Engine including the ability to write T-SQL and the understanding of database design concepts such as relationships, indexing, and normalization.

Other Desired Technology Skills (desired, but not required):
  • Experience with MVC and MVVM design patterns,
  • Experience with testing and debugging applications in a browser or IDE.
  • Experience with website administration using Microsoft Internet Information Services (IIS).
  • Experience with Microsoft Access with knowledge of database design, forms implementation with VBA events, and reports design
  • Experience programming Java
  • Knowledge and experience with ESRI products such as ArcSDE and ArcDesktop
