Job description

The Behavioral Health (BH) area of Health and Human Services is seeking three Senior Social Workers to assist in supporting individuals with mental health, medical, and substance use needs who are involved in the criminal justice systems. These positions will work closely with Diversion Solutions at the Hennepin County Attorney's Office. They will work on a multi-disciplinary team to support the social, mental, and chemical health needs of the person referred to the program.
Effective December 31, 2023, there will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to the minimum and maximum of the range.
Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit employee referral program.
Location and hours:
These positions are hybrid and will be performed both on-site at the Hennepin County Government Center, 300 South 6th St, Minneapolis, MN 55487, and at the Grain Exchange Building, 400 S 4th St, Minneapolis, MN 55415, and remote as job duties require. Ability to travel to attend meetings and meet with residents in the community will be required. Work hours will be Monday through Friday, with typical hours of 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. While this position is designated as hybrid, based on current requirements hires must reside in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
New employees who are hired into remote or hybrid positions between January 2, 2022 to December 31, 2024, will receive $500 toward the cost of establishing consistent internet connectivity, payable upon completion of 6 months of employment.

In these positions you will:

  • Interview and complete comprehensive assessment to assess individuals for substance use disorder treatment needs.
  • Work with individuals to develop goals and service plans, make referrals to community services, and connect individuals to current supports.
  • Assist with forms and applications for benefits and applications for services, determine eligibility, and provide information on community resources.
  • Work closely with individuals in the community, local law enforcement, probation officers, corrections staff, attorneys, community providers, and others.
  • Complete file clearance utilizing county and court systems.
  • Provide consultation and support to teammates including case consultation, signing documentation, facilitating workgroups or meetings, or developing tools and resources.
  • Review resources, information, and services to support an individual engaging in treatment needs related to substance use disorder (SUD) and mental health (MH).
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work.
    • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or human services, and at least 18 semester (27 quarter) credits of graduate work in the below areas, and three years or more of full-time supervised experience as a Social Worker.
    • Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field with course work emphasis in areas such as social work methods, human growth and behavior, and principles of social welfare.
  • A valid driver's license, the ability to obtain a Hennepin County driver's permit, and daily access to reliable transportation to travel primarily within Hennepin County.
  • Ability to lift 25 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
Nice to have:
  • Licensed or working towards licensure in any of the following: Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LGSW), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT), Licensed Processional Counselor (LPC), Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), Licensed Professional Clinic Counselor (LPCC)
  • Experience:
    • Serving individuals living with substance use disorders, and mental health conditions.
    • Serving individuals who are involved in the criminal justice system.
    • Interacting with people from diverse backgrounds including efforts towards disparity reduction.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Hennepin County and community resources for mental health, substance use disorder, social services, and basic needs.
    • Harm reduction and trauma-informed principles.
    • Person-centered thinking.
    • Social determinants of health.
  • Ability to:
    • Work well in unpredictable and challenging situations that call for sensitivity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and independent judgment.
    • Interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Work well independently as well as in a group setting and to be accountable to the team.
