Description
The Behavioral Health (BH) area of Health and Human Services is seeking two Senior Social Workers to work in the Behavioral Health Center. These positions will serve Hennepin County resident adults (18+) who are living with substance use disorders and/or mental health conditions. The Behavioral Health Center is an alternative to unnecessary jail or hospital use for Hennepin County residents who have needs related to mental health or substance use. Additionally, they offer a voluntary social service led response to meaningfully connect residents to services and supports that match their needs.
Effective December 31, 2023, there will be a general salary adjustment of 2.5% to the minimum and maximum of the range.
Current Hennepin County employees who refer a candidate hired into an open competitive position may be eligible for a $500 referral bonus. For more information visit
Location and hours:
These positions are located on the first floor at the Behavioral Health Center at 1800 Chicago Avenue, Minneapolis, MN, 55404. The walk-in services are currently open Monday - Friday from 9am to 9 pm. These positions will work 40 hours per week within the hours of 8am and 10pm primarily at the walk-in center as well as going out into the community with residents at times. Shift schedules are subject to change due to division programming changes. Based on current requirements hires must live in or relocate to Minnesota or Wisconsin.
*Please note that these positions will include weekend hours with the Behavioral Health Center weekend expansion that is anticipated within the next year.

In these positions you will:
  • Welcome and hold space for individuals in a walk-in work environment, develop rapport, show respect, and honor client's choice in a fast-paced clinic environment.
  • Triage and assess needs and engage diverse clients who are experiencing a crisis or have needs related to mental health and/or substance use.
  • Ensure continuity of care, or transitions of care, between and amongst other mental health (MH), substance use disorder (SUD), and/or housing programs.
  • Stay connected and follow-up with the client and the client's identified supports up to 60 days until they are connected to longer-term treatment and recovery supports.
  • Maintain and contribute to policies, procedures, and resources for the staff team and maintain case records and correspondence within an interdisciplinary team.
  • Make decisions with limited supervision, including performing assessments (i.e. needs assessments, harm reduction assessments, and functional assessments) and responding to clients experiencing a mental health and/or substance use crisis.
  • Provide support and consultation to other teammates, including but not limited to case consultation, signing documentation, facilitating workgroups or meetings, or developing tools and resources.
Need to have:
  • One of the following:
    • Master's degree or higher in social work or closely related field with course work emphasis in areas such as social work methods, human growth and behavior, and principles of social welfare.
    • Bachelor's degree in social work, psychology, sociology, or human services, and at least 18 semester (27 quarter) credits of graduate work in the above areas, and three years or more of full-time supervised experience as a Social Worker.
    • Licensed as a Graduate Social Worker by the Minnesota Board of Social Work.
  • A valid driver's license and the ability to obtain a Hennepin County Driver's Permit to occasionally transport clients around Hennepin County.
  • Ability to follow COVID safety precautions within an in-person work environment.
  • Nice to have:
    • Dually licensed as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW) and Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), or any of the following:
      Current Licensed Graduate Social Worker (LSGW), Licensed Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LADC), Licensed Associate Marriage and Family Therapist (LAMFT), Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and working towards becoming clinically licensed as a Licensed Independent Clinical Social Worker (LICSW), Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist (LMFT), or Licensed Professional Clinical Counselor (LPCC).
    • Experience:
      • Serving individuals living with substance use disorders, and mental health conditions.
      • Effectively interacting with people from diverse backgrounds including efforts towards disparity reduction.
  • Knowledge of:
    • Hennepin County and community resources for mental health, substance use disorder, social services, and basic needs.
    • Harm reduction and trauma-informed principles.
    • Person-centered thinking.
    • Social determinants of health.
  • Ability to:
    • Work well in unpredictable and challenging situations that call for sensitivity, flexibility, resourcefulness, and independent judgment.
    • Effectively interact with people from diverse backgrounds.
    • Work well in a group setting and be accountable to the team.
