Johnston County Department of Social Services has an immediate opening for a Social Work Supervisor III position in the Adult Services Unit, located at 714 North Street, Smithfield.

The Adult Services Unit of the Johnston County Department of Social Services provides services to individuals over the age of eighteen. These individuals have a wide range of needs, lifestyles and handicaps. They may be physically and/or mentally handicapped, or they may have no medical problem at all. Adult services offer the following: SA-In Home, In-Home Aid Services, CAP Services, Adult Home Specialist, Placement Services, Protective Services, Intake, Guardianship, and Services for the Blind.

Duties and Responsibilities

The Social Work Supervisor will supervise a sub-unit or team, which is composed of Social Workers that may provide an array of services within the scope of Adult Services policy provisions.

The position requires guidance to Social Work staff in case consultation, coordination of work flow operations and case review by staffing, direct consultation and record monitoring.

The Supervisor will report directly to the Adult and Family Services Program Manager.

The major activity of program supervision is to see that the programs described operate smoothly and efficiently.

In order to monitor these programs, the supervisor reviews all Adult Unit cases, in order to assure proper documentation, implementation, goals and delivery.

Supervisory conferences are held with each worker to discuss program and policy, to evaluate work quality and effectiveness and to access caseloads.

Unit meetings are held in order to provide workers with the opportunity to raise issues of concern about the unit or the agency and to report on any new developments, it is necessary that the worker have a thorough knowledge of all general Social Work principles, techniques, and practices.

Through reading, and workshops, the supervisor must keep abreast of any changes taking place in Social Work.

This position is responsible for evaluating workers' strengths and weaknesses and to arrange for training in the areas of weakness. Tools used for this are policies and procedures manuals, evaluation forms, as well as observation.

Goals are set with the Social Workers and their clients. The supervisor will discuss these goals with the Social Workers and they will be implemented by the worker with the client.

Cases are assigned to the workers by the supervisor. After the Social Worker has done a thorough assessment of the situation and the needs are identified, the goals are named and implemented by the Social Worker and client.

Monitoring and reviewing of service provision are done on a regular basis by the supervisor.

Consultation is provided by the supervisor through individual case conferences as well as upon request. Consultation may require involvement from other workers or other agencies.

Supervisor will conduct team staffing's and participate in unit staffing at the discretion of the Program Manager.

This position will be available for supervision and guidance during non-agency hours when warranted and needed.

Supervisor will supervise vertically and consult horizontally within the unit to ensure appropriate services are provided timely.

Performs other duties of a similar nature and level as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

Knowledge of methods and principles of casework supervision and training.

Considerable knowledge of Social Work principles, techniques and practices and their application to specific casework and community problems.

Considerable knowledge of behavioral and socioeconomic problems and their treatment and governmental and private organizations and community resources.

Considerable knowledge of the laws, regulations and policies which govern Social Work programs.

Ability to supervise, train, or orient lower-level Social Workers, students, interns, or other staff.

Ability to express ideas clearly and concisely and to plan and execute work effectively.

Desired Education and Experience

Master's degree in Social Work from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in Social Work from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience.

Or

A master's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and four years of directly related experience; or a bachelor's degree from an appropriately accredited institution and five years of directly related experience; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

Applicants with supervisory experience in a Social Work program within a county department of social services; extensive front-line experience in a county department of social services in North Carolina preferably in Adult Services.
