This role requires someone who is creative, enjoys challenges and is a natural communicator. The Detroit Zoological Society (DZS) is looking for an intern who loves to scroll through Social Media, create engaging content, keep up with all of the latest trends and interact with consumers to directly support the organization’s mission of creating meaningful connections between people, animals and the natural world so all can thrive.
The internship requires a minimum of 16 hours (two days) per week on-site at the Detroit Zoo. This is a non-paid position for students who receive course credit. This internship is different from the DZS’s communications internship and will be focused more on gathering compelling content for DZS guests to enjoy across multiple Social Media platforms.

Principal Duties and Responsibilities
- Post content to TikTok, Instagram, Facebook and Twitter
- Brainstorm campaign ideas
- Monitor various Social Media platforms
- Analyze analytics to gauge success of campaigns
- Escort media and other guests around the Detroit Zoo and Belle Isle Nature Center, as needed
- Apply learned analytics and media insights to inform external communications
- Attend special events as needed to gather photo and video content to be used in external promotions
- Work directly with the Social Media team on editing, posting and planning content for social platforms
- Work with cross-functional teams to bring social campaigns and initiatives to life
- Engage directly with fans and community through the management of the social pages
- Other administrative duties as assigned
Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Current enrollment as a college junior or senior majoring in communications, public relations or related field
- Experience with Social Media platforms is required
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
- Strong written and oral communication skills required
- Outstanding organizational and time management skills
- Well-versed in Social Media platforms as both a consumer and creator
- Enthusiasm for crafting and promoting content
- Ability to handle and prioritize simultaneous projects and meet deadlines
- Driven and resourceful, adept at working autonomously
Working Conditions
Regular work schedules may include weekends, occasional evenings or early mornings. The work environment is predominantly indoors, but may require work outdoors with exposure to seasonal weather conditions for special events, tours, openings, etc.
Physical Requirements
Requires moderate physical effort such as walking, bending, stooping and standing for extended periods of time. Must be able to lift and move 20 pounds. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions of the job.
