Job description

Encore is in search of an energetic Site Safety Health Officer, a self-starter with a willingness to work hard, take on significant and multiple responsibilities, and with a dedication towards excellence and achieving results.


What to Expect

  • The water is your office view. This is a marine/waterway-based position, and the client requires the Site Safety Health Officer to be on-site (dredge-based) throughout the shift.
  • 17 paid weeks off a year. The schedule is two weeks on and 1 one week off, known as the 14/7 schedule.
  • Opportunity to travel. If you enjoy traveling and want to avoid the monotony of the day-in and day-out routine, then this might be the ideal opportunity. This position will provide SSHO coverage in the Coastal area.

Overview

The Site Safety Health Officer is expected to lead by example, instill awareness, and implement safety procedures to prevent and eliminate injury for all dredge personnel. The Site Safety Health Officer is required to report for work onsite of the construction projects and remain on-site per the contractual requirements. These construction projects are marine-based or inland waterway-based. This SSHO position is 12-hour shifts, rotating nights/days. The Site Safety Health Officer is tasked with administering and implementing the Compnay's Safety Program. This position reports directly to the Safety Director.

Essential functions (This is not all-inclusive)
  • Upholds the Company’s commitment to an injury-free workplace; leads and models safe work practices
  • Follows all safety rules and regulations as well as all company policies and procedures
  • Works safely around machinery; observes and instructs others in proper equipment use; uses/wears all required PPE
  • Ensures team members are provided a safe work environment and are knowledgeable of safe work practices and policies
  • Implements the project site S.H.E. requirements in the Company’s Safety Management Program
  • Guides and supports the Site Management Team and Dredge and Reclamation Crews in all aspects of the company’s Injury Free Work Environment Safety initiative
  • Is 100% familiar with the requirements of the contract specifications and ensures compliance with all safety, health, and environmental issues
  • Makes daily visits to the dredge, attendant plant, and shore-based operations to observe and guide personnel in safe work practices and methods. Walk-around inspections should be made with the Site Superintendent and or Captain / Supervisor whenever possible.
  • Assists Supervisors with ordering safety supplies and equipment resulting from your worksite inspection
  • Participates in project progress meetings and stays abreast of task scheduling to ensure that potential workplace hazards are discussed, and safe work practices are planned
  • Assists and guides the Site Superintendent and Dredge supervisors in preparing and executing the Weekly Toolbox Safety Meetings
  • Prepares a weekly safety report summarizing your daily activities, training, and near-miss and incident summary. This is to be submitted to the Site Superintendent along with a spreadsheet that provides details on the status of safety deficiencies and employee input from End of Shift Tracking Logs.
  • Assists Site Management in conducting new hire safety orientations, familiarization walk-a-rounds, and implementing the ‘Green Hat’ training program
  • Coordinates the required medical care and accompanies the individual to the designated project medical facility in the event an incident occurs
  • Ensures all required reports relating to the incident are correctly completed by the appropriate field supervisor and assists them as necessary
  • Guides site Management in preparation of the Incident investigation report
  • Reviews safety deficiencies/observations with the Site Superintendent, Dredge Captain, Chief Engineer, or other appropriate supervisors
  • Conducts up to a one-hour safety stand down whenever an OSHA Recordable Lost-time injury occurs and takes appropriate remedial measures to prevent the recurrence of the accident
  • Accompanies the customer’s representative on scheduled SITE SAFETY visits to the plant and various site areas
  • Participates in pre-shift meetings and guides the crews in preparing JSAs
  • Makes recommendations for improvements to procedures in the Company’s Safety Management System
  • Monitors dredging activity to ensure compliance with OSHA, Coast Guard, Provincial, and other government regulatory agencies


Minimum Qualifications

  • 3-5 years of direct safety management, dredging, or marine experience is required
  • A degree in Occupational Health and Safety or Industrial or equivalent degree/work experience is preferred
  • First Aid/CPR, AED, and Bloodborne pathogens are a plus
  • Knowledge of construction safety and current Federal and OSHA requirements is required
  • Ability to proactively identify issues and formulate solutions; overcome obstacles to find solutions to problems; includes the ability to work independently
  • Must be able to write procedures, policies, reports, and correspondence
  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures and policies
  • Must have excellent interpersonal skills and be able to interact and form strong working relationships with individuals from all disciplines
  • Ability to solve practical problems
  • Ability to interpret written and oral instructions
  • Proficient in using Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Detail-oriented
  • Ability to multitask
  • Ability to meet the physical requirements of the position as outlined in the Functional Job Description
  • Must be able to successfully pass all pre-employment screening (drug test, fit test) in addition to random drug and alcohol testing
  • Valid Driver's License with clean driving record
