Job description

At Blue Origin, we envision millions of people living and working in space for the benefit of Earth. We're working to develop reusable, safe, and low-cost space vehicles and systems within a culture of safety, collaboration, and inclusion. Join our diverse team of problem solvers as we add new chapters to the history of spaceflight!

This role is a part of New Shepard, a reusable suborbital rocket system designed to take astronauts and research payloads past the Kármán line, the internationally recognized boundary of space. Through operational reusability, New Shepard supports our mission of lowering the cost of access to space!

As part of a small, hardworking and accomplished team of experts, you will be a people manager leading a team of software developers and modeling/simulation engineers responsible for crafting, developing, validating, and upgrading the simulation infrastructure used by New Shepard launch crews for training and procedure validation. You will work in a fast-paced and often uncertain environment, contributing to innovative solutions, while demonstrating individual leadership, technical competence, and attention to detail.

We are looking for someone to apply their leadership skills, technical expertise, and dedication to quality to positively impact safe human spaceflight. Passion for our mission and vision is required!

Responsibilities:

  • Lead the overall technical direction and scope of work of the New Shepard Training Simulator
  • Effectively lead team resources, work scope, budget, schedule, and career development
  • Build and maintain near-term, and long-term planning and deliverables schedules
  • Meet regularly with customers and collaborators to identify areas of improvement and manage expectations
  • Develop software to aid and support simulation model development and Launch Operations procedure design, testing and training in desktop and hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) environments
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team of engineers and experts to develop and integrate multi-functional solutions for simulation development and analysis
  • Develop automated test environments to support regression testing and requirement verification

Minimum Qualifications:

  • B.S. degree or higher in aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field, with hands-on professional experience developing software for engineering problems
  • 2+ years of experience as a manager of people with direct reports, with ability to lead and motivate a team of technical experts
  • 5+ years of relevant software development experience for aerospace or other high technology, safety critical industries
  • Strong software development skills, particularly in C/C++, Python, and Lua
  • Experience with Windows, Linux, Jira, Git, Jenkins, SVN, real time operating systems, serial communications, IP networking, and embedded systems
  • Ability to lead a team on rapid development programs; highly organized and capable of planning, guiding, and completing complex technical work
  • Ability to earn trust, maintain positive and professional relationships, and contribute to a culture of inclusion
  • Hands-on experience with hardware-in-the-loop testing and test development
  • Strong communications skills and the ability to generate engaging presentations, and reports
  • Must be a U.S. citizen or national, U.S. permanent resident (current Green Card holder), or lawfully admitted into the U.S. as a refugee or granted asylum

Preferred Qualifications:

  • M.S. degree in aerospace engineering, computer science, electrical engineering, or related field.
  • Passion and knowledge of space systems and spacecraft system architecture
  • Strong domain knowledge and engineering fundamentals in a traditional engineering subject area in addition to strong software development experience
  • Previous experience with avionics systems and software
  • Experience creating automated build tools, unit tests, and code generation
  • Experience developing and implementing software architecture and design best-practices across complex systems and teams
