Job Purpose/Overview
This position serves as the Junior Electrical Instrumentation Service Technician. The Shift Controls Technician is responsible for the safe, reliable, and efficient performance of the automated plant processes, systems, and lines. They must be multi-crafted with a heavy emphasis on software and control systems. Their work includes on-line troubleshooting and repair, planned work, continuous improvement, capital projects, maintenance projects. Their activities are driven by area performance and planned work order requests. This associate is responsible to identify, prioritize, plan, and execute day-to-day activities with little or no supervision.
Key Responsibilities
Safety - Understand and demonstrate adherence to Mars Human Safety Standards including but not limited to Lock Out Tag Out.
Quality - Ensure adherence to all GMP/HACCP/Q&FS requirements. Each associate is responsible for complying to Mars Petcare quality and food safety policies, procedures, QMP and other auditable quality, food safety and regulatory standards in order to ensure a safe and quality product intended to delight the consumer.
Primary Duties:
Maintain the software infrastructure of the site. Direct the work activities of outside contractors, in the installation of instrumentation, PLC based control systems, and PC based operator interfaces. Act as technical resource to operations/maintenance on controls related issues including troubleshooting, analysis and recommending practical corrective actions for control related problems. Identify opportunities and recommend changes to improve plant performance utilizing current control systems or by improving current systems Troubleshoot control system applications and make necessary modifications to get the systems up and running again. Troubleshoot, analyze, and recommend practical corrective actions for control related problems. Train and support non-technical users on the use of plant floor automation systems. Perform programming, testing, and debugging for new systems as well as for the enhancement of existing systems. Support the introduction to the plant of new control technologies such as device networks, modular I/O, PLC programming software, etc.
Minimum Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent required.
- A two-year technical degree or 3 years direct Controls experience is required minimum for consideration. A degree in controls/electrical/electronic is preferred, including courses in computer science.
- Ability to troubleshoot programs residing in the Rockwell Automation PLC Control Systems in the plant. Siemens a plus.
- Must have a good understanding of interfacing with PLC's, scales, and display devices.
- Working knowledge of Microsoft Word and Microsoft Excel.
- Knowledge of electrical systems using 480-volt 3 phase as well as 240 volt through 24 volt single phase systems.
- Ability to troubleshoot programmable logic controllers (PLCs) hardware including Allen Bradley PLCs as well as others used in the field. Also needs to have software familiarity with Proworx, Concept, Unity software, or similar packages and others used in the field.
- Demonstrated ability to troubleshoot, analyze and resolve technical problems. Ability to read and interpret blueprints as well as basic intermediate PLC ladder logic.
- Working knowledge of Allen Bradley, Square D, and Factory Talk variable frequency drives and other common drives used in the field.
- Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical systems.
- Knowledge of industrial plant systems, equipment and operations.
- Proficient in the use of industrial mechanics tools, electrician's tools, instrumentation and controls tools and rigging/millwork tools.
- Physical requirements: Ability to perform all needed physical activities without restrictions. (Maximum of 50 pounds lifting.)
