BID/JOB ANNOUNCEMENT
Sewer Bricklayer
Department of Water Management
Bureau of Operations and Distribution
Number of Positions: 8 (SEASONAL)
Salary: $50.81 / PR
These positions are open to the public and all current City employees covered under the City's collective bargaining agreement with the Bricklayers- Local 21. Only employees in City job titles in this bargaining unit are eligible to bid.

Under supervision, lays bricks, concrete blocks, sewer pipes, and tile to construct and repair sewer mains and related appurtenances, and performs related duties as required.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES
• Builds and restores catch basins, gutter boxes, manholes, and other appurtenances using brick, concrete block, and tile
• Lays brick and rebuilds manholes and basins
• Directs assigned crew members in the excavation of street surfaces to locate broken or deteriorated sewer masonry
• Assesses extent of repair work required and determines materials and equipment needed to complete jobs
• Supervises laborers in the mixing of mortar prior to construction or repair work
• Repairs and replaces outlet and inlet pipes to facilitate water drainage
• Connects drainpipes and catch basins to main sewer lines and seals connections
• Builds templates and marks guidelines for the proper positioning of bricks
• Directs laborers in the loading of debris onto trucks and in the backfilling of excavated work sites to restore streets
• Ensures safety regulations and procedures at work sites are being followed
• Maintains project time and material records and prepares related reports

Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered bricklayer apprenticeship
training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training,
and experience
WORKING CONDITIONS
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions
• Exposure to loud noise, fumes or dust
• Exposure to hazardous conditions (e.g., construction sites, heavy machinery)
• Work performed in cramped or confined locations
• Work performed below ground level
EQUIPMENT
• Personal protective equipment (e.g., hard hat, shoes, glasses, gloves, vest, pads)
• Safety devices or equipment (e.g., cones, barricades, metal plates, scaffolding, ropes)
• Ladders
• Standard tools and equipment of the cement masonry trade (e.g., trowels, floaters, screeds)
• Standard power and hand tools and equipment of the bricklaying trade (e.g., hammer, wrench,
pliers, tuck pointing grinders, dry cutting and shrouded saws, chisels, wire brushes, pointing trowels)
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS
• Heavy lifting (up to 75 pounds) is required
• Ability to walk and stand for extended or continuous periods of time
• Ability to quickly bend, stretch, twist, or reach out with one's body, arms, and/or legs
• Ability to climb staircases, ladders, and/or step stools
• Ability to operate applicable hand tools, power tools, and equipment
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS
This position requires applicants to complete a written and physical test, results will be sent out by the Department of Human Resources after test results have been analyzed and compiled. Applicants who receive a passing score on the test will be hired in lottery/random order; bid applicants will be selected in seniority order according to the collective bargaining agreement.
NOTE: This position does not require an interview.
Preference will be given to candidates possessing the following:
• Successful completion of a US Department of Labor registered bricklayer apprenticeship training program and journeyman status; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience.
VETERANS PREFERENCE NOTE : The City of Chicago offers Veterans Preference to both current, active military personnel AND military personnel who have served in the Armed Forces of the United States and have received an honorable or general discharge. Eligible candidates must have at least six months of active duty documented. In order to receive the veterans preference, candidates need to indicate whether or not they are a veteran by answering "yes" or "no" to the question on the online application that asks, "Are you currently serving on active duty for at least six months in the Armed Forces of the United States OR have you served in the Armed Forces of the United States on active duty for at least six months and received an honorable or general discharge?" In addition, you must attach documentation to verify your military service. For veterans, you must attach a copy of your DD214 (Member Copy-4) to your online application which includes character of service status OR a letter from the United States Veterans Administration on official stationery stating dates of service and character of service. For active military personnel, you must attach a letter from your Commanding Officer on official stationery verifying your active duty, length of service, and character of service in the Armed Forces of the United States AND a copy of your military ID to your online application. Failure to answer the question and attach the required documentation will result in you not being considered for the Veterans Preference.

Residency Requirement: All employees of the City of Chicago must be actual residents of the City as outlined in 2-152-050 of the City of Chicago Municipal Code. Proof of residency will be required .
