Position Overview

Candidates should be determined, self-motivated, and customer service focused. Qualified candidates will have a high school diploma/GED, some related experience and/or skills, and have the ability to obtain an Oregon CDL with endorsements within six months of hire. All training to obtain a CDL is provided by the City.
This is a full-time position, scheduled to work 1 - 9:30 pm, Monday - Friday.

Under the general guidance of the Shop Foreman, the Service Worker may clean City transit vehicles, shop areas, and/or bus stop locations; fuel and park vehicles and perform minor maintenance tasks at the City shop. May prepare vehicles for operation and performs other similar work as required.
The Service Worker reports to the Shop Foreman and may receive technical direction from other classifications within the division.
Responsibilities
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
The following tasks are representative and not to be considered all inclusive
Clean vehicles
  • Wash interior and exterior of transit buses on a daily basis. Will also wash interior and exterior of other City vehicles.
  • Dust and sweep interior of buses (remove debris)
  • Assist with other scheduled maintenance as needed

Routine maintenance inspection and service
  • Inspect and replenish engine, transmission, steering pump, and coolant fluids on assigned vehicles and equipment on a daily basis
  • Record fluids replaced for each vehicle
  • Fuel vehicles
  • Report potential problems to supervisor

Facility and grounds maintenance (wash and fueling areas)
  • Perform general cleanup of assigned areas, as directed
  • Dump all trashcans in Fleet office and shop bays every night
Bus stop maintenance
  • Perform general maintenance at bus stops
  • Perform general cleanup of assigned bus stops, including collecting and dumping trash at bus stops.
  • Remove debris and graffiti from shelters and signs
  • Assist mechanic with bus stop sign and/or shelter replacement
Database Maintenance
  • Use mobile device to enter various completed tasks into the asset management system

Operate vehicles
  • Perform vehicle exchanges

Qualifications
Education: A high school diploma or G.E.D.
- AND -
Experience: Two months in a position working with janitorial maintenance or related skills.
- OR -
Any equivalent combination of education and experience.
Required Certifications/Licenses: Possess, or ability to obtain within six months of hire, Oregon Commercial Driver's License - Class B with passenger endorsement and air brake endorsement. Training to obtain CDL provided.
Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities
  • Knowledge of fueling requirements for diesel, gasoline, and CNG vehicles and/or transit buses
  • Knowledge of safety requirements and procedures in a maintenance shop environment.
  • Ability to effectively use oral and written communication in the performance of duties and responsibilities.
  • Ability to measure and adjust fluid levels in city vehicles
  • Ability to read meters and record data.
  • Ability to work various hours including early morning and late evening shifts split shifts, weekends and holidays, and call back in emergency situations and split days off.
  • Ability to learn city procedures, regulations, and requirements with respect to procurement, safety, operations, and organization.
  • Ability to work independently with little direct supervision.
  • Skilled in operating small and large vehicles, including passenger vehicles.

Additional Information
Work Environment: This position performs cleaning and minor routine maintenance tasks outdoors in non-environmentally controlled conditions. Incumbents could be exposed to all types of weather conditions, including very hot/cold temperatures, and contaminants such as gases, dust, or odors. Incumbents will be provided with and required to wear appropriate personal protective equipment for specific tasks and/or weather.
Physical Requirements: Work requires multi-limb coordination, manual dexterity, arm-hand steadiness, gross body coordination, near/far vision, static strength (push, pull, lift, and/or carry up to 100 lbs), standing for long periods of time, walking, kneeling, crouching, stooping, crawling, bending, twisting, and repetitive motion.
Cognitive Functions: This position requires the ability to communicate with others (including verbal and written expression and speech clarity and recognition), apply active listening skills, utilize deductive reasoning, concentrate, read and understand ideas presented in writing, evaluate spatial orientation, and quickly respond. Work is performed independently - requires the ability to analyze a situation and problem solve.
