The City of Johnson City, Tennessee is currently accepting online applications for a Service Technician in the Solid Waste department. Performs intermediate skilled welding and fabricating work related to repair and servicing of waste containers to include front load containers, roll off containers and compactor containers; does related work as required. Work of this class involves light repair and maintenance work on waste vehicles, light and heavy trucks, tractors, and all types of gasoline and diesel driven equipment. Work assignments are received either in writing or orally does require diagnosing mechanical failure and making necessary repairs. Work is subject to review while in progress and upon completion.
Essential Functions of Position:
- Performs major and minor repair on all types' of waste containers to include front, rear and roll off containers.
- Fabricates steel components to include front load bottoms and roll off metal needed for repairs;
- installs lids and wheels on containers needing replacement;
- performs preventive maintenance inspections, diagnostic and repair of electrical and hydraulic systems on waste compactors;
- Conducts safety checks on compactors and containers
- cuts steel using a plasma cutter or torch;
- Paints repaired containers if needed;
- Performs service calls on heavy duty waste compactors.
- installs city and safety decals on repaired containers;
- Completes welding and metal fabrication work need on waste vehicles;
- Performs related tasks as required.
- Must have Class B CDL or ability to acquire license with 4 months of starting position.
- Ability to work as a team player in a fast paced environment, and ability to find root causes for equipment issues.
Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: General knowledge of the maintenance and repair on a wide variety of waste vehicles, and waste compactor equipment; thorough knowledge and skill in the use of service tools and diagnostic equipment such as drill press, grinders, brake lathes, laptop computer, scanner, welding equipment and all tools related to the repair and maintenance of various types of waste equipment; thorough knowledge in safety precautions and liabilities related to the repair and maintenance of various types of equipment; Ability to diagnose, repair, and trouble shoot electrical systems,. Ability to keep records of repairs, parts and servicing of various types of equipment, ability to work from drawings, sketches and wiring schematics, ability to use and interpret service and repair manuals for different types of equipment. Ability to follow both oral and written instructions accurately. Dexterity to operate machinery.
Acceptable Experience and Training: Completion of high school or GED and considerable experience at welding and fabrication, supplemented by approved vocational school training in the welding and fabrication field, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities to perform the job. Pre-employment DOT physical, drug screening and background check required.
