Job Description

The purpose of this position is to maintain all city vehicles, including CDL vehicles and heavy equipment in a reliable and safe condition so as to be available for service according to approved standards. The work involves performing all types of equipment maintenance, preventative maintenance and repair work. This includes performing routine and specialized maintenance for all equipment, maintaining tools and equipment in the most cost-effective manner. A vehicle mechanic is responsible for maintaining and improving upon the efficiency and effectiveness of all areas under his/her direction and control. Performs skilled equipment operation, inspection and maintenance on various equipment in the performance of materials moving, trash removal, beautification, snow plowing, leaf collection, repair and maintenance of roads, sewers and other similar activities. Performs any combination of duties to maintain and repair property, using a variety of machines, tools, and equipment: Receives work orders and instructions from Foreman, Director, or their designee.

Work is performed in a garage, yard and field locations for emergency repairs, usually noise levels are loud. Position entails some driving and is subject to exposure to hazardous substances or materials, working near mechanical moving parts and exposed to electrical shock; may work in high precarious places. Work is performed inside and occasionally outside in all weather conditions.

Requires the operation of light and heavy trucks and equipment to test drive including but not limited to: front -end loaders, backhoes, snowplows, tractors, street sweeper and bobcat. Also requires the operation of hand tools and power tools. Uses computers and telephone.

Duties and Responsibilities:

  1. Reads equipment specifications, repair manuals and implements adopted maintenance schedules and procedures.
  2. Does preventative and routine maintenance on lawnmowers, cars, light and heavy trucks, loaders, backhoes, tractors and street sweepers, etc.
  3. Prepares equipment maintenance reports through work orders and/or other job cost and control procedures.
  4. Performs equipment maintenance and repair work involving tasks ranging in complexity from checking sufficiency of fluid levels and pressures to complete engine and equipment disassembly, repair and rebuild.
  5. Troubleshoots and repairs electrical, hydraulic, mechanical and other equipment systems.
  6. Test operates vehicles or equipment, discusses performance with the operator; uses lift or jack to analyze, test, inspect and determine the cause of the malfunction. Performs standard diagnostic tests using specially designed test equipment for hydraulic components, electrical systems, brakes systems, clutches, and similar mechanical work as available.
  7. Uses mechanic's hand tools and power equipment to remove, disassemble and repair, rebuild or replace defective parts or units.
  8. Adapts or modifies vehicles and equipment for safety purposes or emergency use
  9. Follows standard safety procedures and regulations
  10. Is subject to call out to respond to emergencies after normal working hours.
  11. Performs other heavy laboring and various unskilled and semi-skilled tasks essential to the municipal building, public works, and utility operations using a wide variety of power, pneumatic and hand tools as needed
  12. Performs snow plowing duties as needed
  13. Communicates professionally with staff, supervisors and the public;
  14. Attends training classes as directed;
  15. Responds to emergencies, weather and special requests; flexible shifts and overtime required as needed;
  16. Any other functions and/or responsibilities assigned by the Director or his designee.

Education and Experience:

  • Education: High School Diploma or GED equivalent; Professional education, Associates or Bachelor's degree in a related field highly desirable.
  • Experience: Must have more than 3 years of vehicle and heavy equipment mechanic experience; Vocational school or certification may substitute for one year of experience vocational experience is preferred, or any equivalent combination of education,
  • Valid State of Ohio Class B Commercial Driver's License with an acceptable driving record.

This job classification is included within the bargaining unit represented by the AFSCME Local 2339 and Ohio Council 8 and therefore is subject to the terms and conditions of the Collective Bargaining Agreement between the City of Independence and AFSCME Local 2339 and Ohio Council 8.

The physical demands are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to talk and hear. The employee is frequently required to bend, stoop, walk, climb stairs or ladders and push or lift light weight (5-10 pounds). Somewhat frequently work in awkward or confined positions and lift or push moderate weight (15-20 pounds). Occasional lifting or pushing of heavy weight (50+ pounds).
