Queens Community House (QCH) is seeking qualified ServentLeader Interns with a strong commitment to youth development for our Summer/After School Programs. The Servant Leader Intern (SLI) serves as a classroom teacher in a literacy-based summer and after-school enrichment program. The SLI helps lead a literacy-rich curriculum during the morning and leads enrichment activities in the afternoon. The Servant Leader Intern should be experienced in working with small and large groups of children, responsible, energetic, able to think on his/her feet, a good leader, and a strong role model.

We are seeking multiple ServantLeader Interns that have experience in the following areas: Literacy, Sports, Dance, Visual Arts, Academics, Music, Theater, Karate, Leadership Development, and/or STEM instruction.

Primary Responsibilities:

  • Understand and enforce program expectations, policies, and protocols to ensure a safe and respectful environment in alignment with agency, school, and funder protocols and guidelines.
  • Engage a maximum group of 10 scholars per class, ages 6-11 years old over the course of a 7-week summer program.
  • Create and implement effective and interesting age-appropriate lesson plans and curricula that adheres to program goals and assures high student engagement.
  • Deliver reading curriculum to the scholar group.
  • Collaborate with staff around special projects and take direction and supervision from Educational Specialist, Director, and Assistant Directors.
  • Communicate with Assistant Director and Director about any schedule and classroom modifications and behavioral or environmental issues.
  • Role model and demonstrate appropriate communication with all stakeholders of the program (scholars, families, teachers, staff, and funders).
  • Create a nurturing and fostering atmosphere to learn and create a sense of belonging for participants.
  • Secure classrooms and space used at the end of the program.
  • Attend weekly staff meetings and complete professional development hours indicated at the time of hiring.
  • Set up and break down classroom space, including securing and organizing the appropriate materials.
  • Maintain accurate attendance records.
  • Collaborate with site staff to establish and maintain a positive, supportive, and structured environment for the scholars.
  • Other duties as assigned by the supervisor(s).

Qualifications:

  • Enrollment in College in a related field (Education/Human Development/Sociology/Human Services—for at least two years).
  • Experience leading activities for youth in after-school or camp settings.
  • Strong facilitation, conflict resolution, and group management skills.
  • Experience in leading youth in leadership, community service, and civic engagement projects is preferred.
  • Interest in developing and providing quality hands-on project-based learning activities.
  • Strong work ethic and professional demeanor, and team-oriented attitude.
  • Organized, self-motivated, and effective time management skills.
  • Computer savvy and excellent verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Must be cleared of NYS DOH Fingerprinting Screening; NYS Clearance Review Background Check; 3 Reference Checks; physical examination with updated TB test.
  • All Servant Leader Interns are required to attend the following trainings:
    1. Pre-National Training: May 11th (Queens, NY)
    2. National Training: May 28st - June 2th (Knoxville, TN)
    3. Post National Training: TBD (Queens, NY)

Status:Part-Time

Compensation:$19 - $20 per hour

Schedule: The following summer hours are required; not flexible.

Summer (July 1th – August 23th): Monday – Friday; 7:30 am – 3:30 pm (with a one-hour lunch break)

School year: Monday – Friday, 2:00 pm – 6:00 pm
