Position:

The Idaho Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) is hiring a Senior Wastewater Engineer for our Surface & Wastewater Division in Boise, Idaho.


Salary Range: $40–$45.81


Responsibilities:

Engineering Reviews

  • Employ diversified engineering principles to analyze and review advanced, specialized, and technical engineering plans.
  • Serve as an agency consultant for specialized applications.
  • Determine the appropriate classifications for wastewater treatment plants and collection systems based on size, capacity, technology, and other relevant factors. Regularly update and maintain the classification system used by Idaho’s Division of Professional Licensing.
  • Evaluate and approve septic tank designs and technologies for residential and commercial developments to ensure compliance with state standards for capacity, safety, environmental impact, and sustainable development.

Engineering Support

  • Serve as the lead technical engineer in developing, interpreting, and applying engineering-specific wastewater rules.
  • Guide agency development of sound engineering principles that are consistent with regulations.
  • Provide expert guidance to regional engineering teams on complex wastewater treatment and collection system issues.
  • Support the development and interpretation of permit requirements, compliance schedules, and enforcement-related documents with regional and divisional staff to ensure state rules and industry best practices are followed.
  • Collaborate with regional engineering teams to develop Wastewater Engineering technical documents and guidance materials, such as standard operating procedures and policies.
  • Stay updated on Wastewater Engineering regulations, trends, and technologies.
  • Foster collaboration and communication across agencies and industry to promote best practices and innovative solutions.
  • Lead training initiatives, such as a biennial agency conference, to increase regional engineering teams’ expertise in consistently applying Wastewater Engineering rules and to ensure permit compliance across the state.

Minimum Qualifications:

Licensure: Licensed in Idaho as a Professional Engineer (PE), or eligibility for comity licensure by the Idaho Board of Professional Engineers in accordance with Idaho Code, Title 54, Chapter 12;
AND Valid Driver's license.
Experience: coordinating with State and local government operations in one of the specific engineering specialties described below; evaluating engineering projects and making decisions relative to their merit; writing engineering reports and related correspondence; reviewing engineering analysis; making oral presentations to groups relative to the merits of engineering applications.

Required Specialty Minimum Qualification

DEQ 2883 – Water Quality

Must have experience applying engineering principles in the following aspects of Water Quality Protection:

PUBLIC DRINKING WATER (chemical treatment and stabilization of drinking water/groundwater, well design, well construction, and hydrogeology, treatment of surface water for public drinking water supplies;)

MUNICIPAL & INDUSTRIAL WASTEWATER (physical, biological and chemical treatment of wastewater, facility planning grants, and state revolving fund construction loans;)

SOLID WASTE (activities related to solid waste and biosolids management;)

SURFACE & GROUNDWATER PROTECTION (permitting, permit certification, storm water and pretreatment, materials and standards, flow analyses, collection and distribution and cross connection control;)

DRINKING WATER & WASTEWATER DISINFECTION AND DISINFECTION BY-PRODUCTS (disinfection of water and wastewater and wastewater by-products.) To meet this specialty, you must have a combination of approximately four years of post-licensure experience in at least two of the five areas listed.


Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to sit and work on a computer for 2-4 hours at a time.
  • Ability to bend and reach for filing purposes.
  • Some travel may be required.
  • Ability to climb ladders, staircases, work on uneven terrain.
  • Ability to work on elevated instrument platforms, ladder, etc.
  • Occasional travel required.
  • May work in the vicinity of loud noise.
