Job description

Change.org is searching for a Senior UX Designerwho is great at UX, testing, processes and accessibility and has a passion for expanding our platform to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to take deeper civic action.
We're a social impact business (a public benefit company), and the world's largest nonprofit-owned tech platform focused on civic action with 100m monthly users, 50,000+ campaigns launched on the site every month, and a 100% user-generated revenue model. Our users win campaigns for change once every hour.
From mobilizing over 5 million people to investigate the fires in the Amazon, to mobilizing nearly 3 million against war and famine in Yemen, to large-scale mobilizations for the people of Iran and against the war in Ukraine, and calling for Racial Justice in the US, many movements were born on Change.org. Dozens of local, national, and international victories are happening every day thanks to the strength of our members who are changing the lives of people around the world. We want to help them go even further and we need your help!
Imagine that a major, impactful event happened (or is about to occur) in your community. You are passionate about the issue and want to harness the power of the people around you to make some kind of positive change, but aren't quite sure where to start. This is the reality of so many activists and organizers who use Change.org - and our team is uniquely positioned to help them when they need it most. We have the opportunity to address many real-world challenges that can only be solved with a deep empathy for our users, diligent product & design thinking, and a strong drive to make a positive impact. Some questions we're working on answering right now are:

  • How might we best support movement leaders and decision makers to create change?
  • What resources do people who come to our site to support an issue need?
  • How might we help people to celebrate, support and motivate others?

You will report to our Associate Design Director.
As a key member of our Design team, you will be influential in creating and developing the user experience, feeding directly into the product strategy for your product team. You are great at UX, testing, processes and accessibility and have a passion for expanding our platform to mobilize hundreds of millions of people to take deeper civic action.
Key Outcomes:
  • Be influential in creating and developing the user experience, feeding directly into the product strategy for your product team.
  • Reduce complexity to create simple, delightful experiences for our users.
  • Create prototypes and running experiments to iteratively test your hypotheses.
  • Use and evolve our design system and guidelines, to create new features from ideas on paper to implementation.
  • Apply accessibility standards and guidelines to your designs.
  • Collaborate with product managers and engineers to create product plans and maintain product design processes.

The most important skills and capabilities for the role are:
  • Design fundamentals - you understand, practice, and evolve your visual design (color, typography, layout, illustration) and our interaction design (you design experiences that are predictable and easily understood with clear affordances/signifiers and consistent feedback).
  • Collaboration and Feedback - you provide constructive feedback to other designers and welcome feedback from others.
  • Communication - you communicate design goals and processes clearly and concisely to other team members and stakeholders.
  • Curiosity and initiative: you continually seeks opportunities to develop their skills and learn from others.

Target experience:
  • ~ 5 + years of design experience

Interested? Great! Here's what you should know:
This is a FULL TIME ROLE, and we are hiring remotely.
Change.org is a global company, and salaries are adjusted for cost of labor in each city. For example, the annual salary of a Senior UX Designer is $166,500 in San Francisco or New York, would be $158,000 in Austin, Boston, LA or Seattle.
We anticipate moving quickly and our evaluation processis as follows:
STEP 1 - Screening - a member of the People Team is looking to see if you have all of the required skills and capabilities for the position.
STEP 2 - Associate Director Interview - we are looking to see if you are a good fit for the needs of the role. We want to know that you are a great communicator and practitioner.
STEP 3 - Design Fundamentals Presentation - You will present key pieces from your portfolio to members of the Product team. We want to see that you are capable of presenting your work in a clear and concise narrative format and that your work is thought through and crafted with care.
We know the confidence gap and imposter syndrome can get in the way of meeting amazing candidates like you, so please don't hesitate to apply-we'd love to hear from you. We also know it's rare for someone to meet 100% of the qualifications. Please apply anyway!
We're working for a world where no one is powerless, and where creating change is a part of everyday life. We're just getting started and hope you'll join us!
We especially encourage applicants of different backgrounds, cultures, genders, experiences, abilities and perspectives to apply. We're actively working to increase the diversity of experience and perspectives on our team and are looking for someone who can help continue to lead that process.
