Marine Underwriter & Energy, Talbot U.S.
Primary Responsibility:
A Senior Underwriter will demonstrate significant technical analysis and underwriting acumen combined with marketing and sales skills to meet production underwriting goals. This position will be a primary contributor to the development and production of a profitable portfolio, a key member of a high performing team, and overall underwriting and execution for Talbot U.S. This position will maintaining strong broker and client relationships and be responsible for a sub-set of the overall profitability of the business. Candidates are expected to work effectively in a team environment in addition to working independently to manage a profitable book of new and renewal business.

Desired Contribution
As a key contributor to Talbot U.S., you will be a "go-to" source for help, support, and day-to-day execution because of your deep knowledge and expertise in your field and hands-on underwriting performance. As a more experienced team member, you are capable of driving continual improvement and impacting the way that things get done. You are generally considered to be a substitute in-command behind the Head of Class for Talbot U.S., if and when they are out of office. Because of your influence, whether direct or indirect, we are able to deliver powerful outcomes for our clients.
Responsibilities:
  • Underwriting and Operational Excellence
    • Execute the agreed strategy, business objectives and target profitability for the U.S. market for the respective Class of Business
    • Maintain consistent underwriting best practices and guidelines to ensure rating and pricing adequacy
    • Underwrite new and existing business in accordance with underwriting authority
    • Negotiate pricing, terms and conditions & deal structures
    • Assist in ensuring underwriters with the U.S. team underwrite in accordance with underwriting authority
    • Act as the primary referral underwriter for the respective U.S. team when the Head of Class is out, to ensure all relevant risks written are in line with underwriting philosophy and policies
    • Technically evaluate risks to help achieve profitable growth to the portfolio
    • Review and negotiate manuscript form wordings and coverages
    • Maintain and monitor appropriate aggregate exposure by sub-classes, insureds, and geography
    • Ensure that the administration of the document management and workflow systems, population of pricing other risk management information, the maintenance of files and records, underwriting and peer review is carried out in accordance to internal procedures
    • Ensure that premium entries in the Company's systems are reviewed and accurately maintained in accordance with applicable procedures
    • Ensure that any errors or omissions in the entry of risks onto the risk recording system by the relevant team are corrected
    • Demonstrate a consistent understanding of regulatory and compliance processes
    • Act in accordance with all regulatory standards and principles at all times
    • Assist in identifying trends in the portfolio, communicating & implementing appropriate measures in order to protect the portfolio from adverse exposures
    • Influence decisions by use of analytics and underwriting experience to differentiate Talbot
    • Management of a book of business including broker plans, target account lists, pipelines, and action plans for poor performing accounts
    • Participate in special underwriting projects as needed
    • Provide information and assistance as needed to ensure that other staff can carry out their responsibilities
    • Make every reasonable effort to increase own knowledge, skills and expertise

  • Distribution / Production
    • Participate in (and lead) broker engagement plans, ultimately driving submission flow that specifically fits our desired appetite
    • Execute business development and marketing strategies to generate new, and continuously develop existing, business relationships
    • Communicate risk appetite and value proposition to brokers
    • Provide superior customer service to brokers and clients
    • Help to develop products and services to producers
    • Collaborate with distribution partners to be visible on a weekly basis
  • Collaboration
    • Establish strong relationships with leadership and underwriting across the organization
    • Collaborate to deliver the appropriate underwriting authority in the U.S.

Job Requirements:
  • Years of Experience and Industry Relevance
    • At least 7 years insurance underwriting experience in (or relevant to) the respective Line of Business
    • Sufficient experience in the insurance industry, with commercial knowledge of P&C lines of business, including product features, forms, regulatory environments and risks
    • Professional Insurance qualifications and/or designations a plus or evidence of progression towards the same
    • Established and strong relationships with customers and intermediaries
  • Proven Capabilities and Relevant Knowledge
    • Knowledge of market segmentation, portfolio management, and distribution
    • Strong knowledge of first party insurance for designated Class
    • Demonstrated sales, marketing, and relationship building experience
    • Ability to adequately analyze various structures (100%, primary/shared and layered, and excess structures)
    • Sufficient technical analysis and underwriting acumen combined with marketing and sales skills
    • Client focused, and results oriented
    • Willingness to be flexible, learn on the job, and maintain a can-do attitude
    • Comfort with analytical tools and technology

    • Must be able to work outside of normal office hours including evenings, weekends and travel for business as necessary
  • Education
    • Bachelor's degree, professional designation, or evidence of progression towards same strongly preferred
