Microsoft Silicon, Cloud Hardware, and Infrastructure Engineering (SCHIE) is the team behind Microsoft’s expanding Cloud Infrastructure and responsible for powering Microsoft’s “Intelligent Cloud” mission. SCHIE delivers the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's over 200 online businesses including Bing, MSN, Office 365, Xbox Live, Teams, OneDrive, and the Microsoft Azure platform globally with our server and data center infrastructure, security and compliance, operations, globalization, and manageability solutions. As Microsoft's cloud business continues to grow the ability to deploy new offerings and hardware infrastructure on time, in high volume with high quality and lowest cost is of paramount importance. To achieve this goal, the team is instrumental in defining and delivering operational measures of success for hardware manufacturing, improving the planning process, quality, delivery, scale and sustainability related to Microsoft cloud hardware. We are looking for engineers with a dedicated passion for customer focused solutions, insight and industry knowledge to envision and implement future technical solutions that will manage and optimize the Cloud infrastructure.

 

As a Senior Thermal Engineer, you will focus on the thermal hardware design of Azure servers and related components at the server and rack level. A mix of technical breadth and depth is required to work cross-functionally with different disciplines (Mechanical, Electrical, Thermal, and Software) to develop thermal hardware to effectively manage high performance data center devices. You will work with internal and external partners, focusing on delivering the next generation of world class data center hardware.

Minnimum Qualifications

  • 7+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Bachelor's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Master's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Doctorate degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • Experience in thermal design and analysis of Server architecture is desired. Working knowledge of mechanical and electrical system design considerations.
  • Exposure/Hands-on experience with server-related Thermal, Airflow, and Liquid cooling testing.

Other Requirements

Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements are required for this role. These requirements include, but are not limited to the following specialized security screenings: Microsoft Cloud Background Check: This position will be required to pass the Microsoft Cloud Background Check upon hire/transfer and every two years thereafter. 

 

Preferred Qualifications

  • 11+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Bachelor's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Master's degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR Doctorate degree in Thermal or Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience

    • OR equivalent experience.

  • Proficiency in Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis. Expertise using FloEFD and Flotherm.
  • Experience with Mechanical Computer-Aided Design (CAD) and CAD data management. Parametric Technology Corporation (PTC) Creo and Windchill.
  • Communication skills, including the ability to clearly express technical concepts in verbal and written forms.
  • Experience creating high-level systems concepts, documenting, and evaluating concepts, and providing analysis to other organizations and upper management.
  • Problem-solving, debug, and failure analysis skills with a solid understanding of core engineering principles and analytical techniques required to help guide our Asia development partners.
  • Some travel domestic/international travel required as appropriate to support design and build activities.

Mechanical Engineering IC4 - The typical base pay range for this role across the U.S. is USD $112,000 - $218,400 per year. There is a different range applicable to specific work locations, within the San Francisco Bay area and New York City metropolitan area, and the base pay range for this role in those locations is USD $145,800 - $238,600 per year.
