Job description

Are you looking for a fast-paced and challenging position that will provide you with a wide range of Information Technology (IT) experience as a Senior Automation and Stack Reliability Engineer (SASRE)? Then this position is for you. The Senior Automation and Stack Reliability Engineer (SASRE) is responsible for ensuring the health, stability, performance, and general availability of the Department's mission-critical applications and services. The incumbent models an automation-first mindset, and has broad responsibility for the successful execution of three interrelated activities: SDLC automation, execution environment optimization, and incident response.
SDLC Automation
The SASRE:
• Evaluates end-to-end SDLC processes for opportunities where automation can be employed as a force multiplier, enabling staff to work more efficiently while delivering more repeatable, predictable, and therefore reliable results
• Designs and develops automated solutions, based on prior evaluations, to simplify and streamline (e.g. Ansible playbooks, Kubernetes operators, etc.) the deployment and management of software infrastructure stack components
• Provides recommendations to, and establishes guidelines and instructions for, developers and configuration management specialists on how best to leverage
Execution Environment Optimization
The SASRE:
• Evaluates the runtime performance and behavior of supported systems and make actionable recommendations to relevant SDLC staff on how they may be improved
• Develops and maintains, in collaboration with the relevant system architect, a set of key performance indicators (KPIs) by which the system's health is benchmarked and measured
• Works with SDLC staff to ensure identified KPIs are exposed to the appropriate application performance management (APM) tools
• Advises performance test teams (for supported systems) on developing KPI-aware and stress testing to measure how the system behaves under extreme load
• Recommends structural changes that, if made, would lead to improved system stability and reliability
Incident Response
During a production incident for a supported system, the SASRE:
• Assists the SDLC and operations staff in restoring the system to a healthy state (as established by baseline KPIs)
• May--with prior authorization from the system architect--make discrete and temporary adjustments to a supported system's resource allocation to return it to stability; permanent changes are made by the relevant environment specialist.
As a senior member of the Automation and Stack Reliability Team, the SASRE has a responsibility to mentor junior team members and provide general technical leadership for the team.
Percentage Workload
30% SDLC automation
30% Execution environment optimization
20% Mentoring and developing staff
10% Incident response
10% Other duties as required
