Our Company
The North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) is a not-for-profit international regulatory authority whose mission is to assure the effective and efficient reduction of risks to the reliability and security of the grid. NERC develops and enforces Reliability Standards; annually assesses seasonal and long-term reliability; monitors the bulk power system through system awareness; and educates, trains, and certifies industry personnel. NERC's area of responsibility spans the continental United States, Canada, and the northern portion of Baja California, Mexico. NERC is the Electric Reliability Organization (ERO) for North America, subject to oversight by the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) and Provincial authorities in Canada. NERC's jurisdiction includes users, owners, and operators of the bulk power system, which serves nearly 400 million people.

Your Impact
The Senior Standards Developer manages projects to timely develop quality reliability standards that are intended to maintain (or preserve) and mitigate (or minimize) risks to the bulk power system. The Senior Standards Developer works closely with industry experts, NERC legal and compliance staff, and federal regulators to ensure standards are technically correct, clear, and measurable. The Senior Standards Developer is responsible for adhering to the NERC Rules of Procedure to satisfy requirements of due process, openness, reasonable notice and opportunity for public comment, and the balance of interests. This position reports to the Manager of Standards Development.
Your Role
  • Develop and manage multiple project plans to develop high quality standards that provide for an adequate level of bulk power system reliability.
  • Lead numerous technical discussions with NERC, FERC, and industry experts, and independently facilitate drafting team meetings on highly complicated reliability issues while driving the team to reach consensus in order to meet aggressive deadlines.
  • Execute, control, and proactively manage to project schedules including risk identification and mitigation, and change management.
  • Facilitate committee and subcommittee meetings as assigned.
  • Mentor and provide guidance to Standards developers and other staff on issues related to standards and reliability.
  • Coordinate with other standards development staff and other NERC departments and regions to facilitate the successful development and implementation of standards.
  • Assist NERC legal in developing draft pleadings related to NERC activities.
  • Communicate with industry stakeholders regarding draft standards through presentations, briefings, seminars, news articles, and workshops.
  • Report on project status, risks, and achievement of key milestones.
  • Ensure that standards development activities are conducted in adherence with NERC Rules of Procedure.
  • Be familiar with and adhere to NERC information technology security practices.

Qualifications
  • A Bachelor's Degree from an accredited four-year college or university, or equivalent experience.
  • Engineer with a minimum of 10 years' experience in the electric power industry and/or a J.D. licensed to practice law in at least one state with a minimum of 5 years' experience in the electric power industry drafting policy, regulation, legislation or other guidance material.
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment with minimal direct supervision.
  • Ability to manage priorities in order to meet set milestones and deadlines.
  • Competence in interpersonal communications, with the ability to interact with people from many levels of industry.
  • Excellent writing, editing, and proofreading skills.
  • Proficiency using Microsoft Office tools such as Word, Outlook, Excel, PowerPoint, and TEAMS.
  • Ability and willingness to travel regularly.
