About the role:
We are seeking a highly motivated and innovative Senior Scientist I/II with demonstrated knowledge of immunology, expertise in developing/executing assays leading to biomarker discovery and validation with a track record of innovation.
This is an exciting opportunity to join the Oncology Translational Research (OTR) department at Novartis Biomedical Research in Cambridge, MA. OTR is a global laboratory-based research group, which supports the development of novel therapeutics in the Oncology Disease Area from early stages of target identification through proof-of-concept clinical trials. Key activities of our group include understanding target epidemiology and biology, therapeutic mechanisms of action, response/resistance biomarkers, indication selection and rational combination opportunities across a diversity of mechanisms of action. This position is ideal for talented, highly motivated, and results-oriented individuals wishing to combine their interest in novel areas of cancer immunology with their strong desire to bridge exploratory research to early clinical trial design.
Your Key Responsibilities:
Your responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
  • Support the design and execution of immunological assays, including flow cytometry-based assays, functional assays, and single-cell profiling technologies to characterize immune cell populations and identify exploratory biomarkers.
  • Perform ex vivo assays including immunology-based analysis and pharmaco-dynamic studies tailored to the therapy and target of interest, with an emphasis on flow cytometry analysis of tumor, immune cells, and other tissue samples from patients.
  • Develop, troubleshoot, and optimize cutting-edge immunological assays and implementing new technologies to assess mechanisms of action and exploratory biomarkers.
  • Lead efforts to characterize immune cell populations from peripheral blood and tissues by implementing, analyzing, and visualizing data from novel immunological assays.
  • Support efforts to develop key translational research questions related to mechanisms of action and identification of novel biomarkers from peripheral blood and tissues.
  • Document, analyze, and interpret experiments in a timely manner to advise project strategy and next steps.
  • Present results within a multidisciplinary team environment.

Role Requirements

Essential Requirements:
  • A minimum of a Bachelors degree Biology, Molecular and Cellular Biology, Pharmacology, Immunology or related scientific discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience in immunology, cancer immunology or related field in cancer and/or immunology research
  • Demonstrated experience with a breadth of immune, cellular, and molecular biological methods.
  • Experience in T cell/myeloid/B cell biology, primary cell culture, immune cell assay techniques
  • Independently conceives experiments that implement project strategy and increasingly lead to "go" or "no go" decisions.
  • Runs complex experiments and/or takes opportunity to bring new techniques into lab.
  • Practices efficient time management, focuses on deliverables, and is able to effectively prioritize when designing/undertaking experimental plan.
  • Analyzes and communicates own results to department/project meetings.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills
Desired Requirements:
  • Experience with cell and gene therapy is a plus.
  • Experience with in vivo immune models is a plus.

Novartis Compensation and Benefit Summary: The pay range for this position at commencement of employment is expected to be between $92,800 -$153,600/year; however, while salary ranges are effective from 1/1/23 through 12/31/23, fluctuations in the job market may necessitate adjustments to pay ranges during this period. Further, final pay determinations will depend on various factors, including, but not limited to geographical location, experience level, knowledge, skills, and abilities. The total compensation package for this position may also include other elements, including a sign-on bonus, restricted stock units, and discretionary awards in addition to a full range of medical, financial, and/or other benefits (including 401(k) eligibility and various paid time off benefits, such as vacation, sick time, and parental leave), dependent on the position offered. Details of participation in these benefit plans will be provided if an employee receives an offer of employment. If hired, employee will be in an “at-will position” and the Company reserves the right to modify base salary (as well as any other discretionary payment or compensation program) at any time, including for reasons related to individual performance, Company or individual department/team performance, and market factors.
