Description

The Chemical Engineering Research & Development department (CERD), part of the Process Research and Development organization, is seeking highly motivated individuals who are looking for an opportunity to work in a fast-paced job that provides a high degree of technical and project management responsibility.  This position, located in our Hazardous Reaction Laboratory (HRL) within the Safety Engineering Laboratories, is largely hands-on and involves exploring unique chemistry and engineering problems aimed at achieving research goals related to process development, technology development, and production of active pharmaceutical ingredients (API) with the lens of Hazardous Reactions, including high temperature, high pressure, and other hazard considerations.  Under scientific and administrative direction, the chemist/engineer in this role conducts independent research which involves conceiving, designing, planning, and implementing advanced experiments. Reactions will span multiple types of synthetic transformations, including heterogeneous and homogeneous catalysis. Activities will include working from milligram-scale to supporting work in kilogram-scale facilities. The chemist/engineer will also be expected to exhibit a mindset of safety and quality compliance, which will include following current Good Manufacturing Practices (cGMPs), and participating in risk assessments, deviation investigations, and Good Documentation Practices (GDPs).

A high level of innovation, creativity, and self-initiative along with the ability to plan and organize activities are expected.  Successful candidates will be required to communicate regularly and clearly as they discuss technical problems, support operations, and interface with cross-functional colleagues.

Education Minimum Requirement

  • The position requires either a BS and/or MS in Chemistry or Chemical/Biochemical Engineering (or comparable) from an accredited college/university plus at least 5 years of relevant work experience in process development, or a PhD in Chemistry or Chemical/Biochemical Engineering (or comparable) from an accredited college/university by expected graduation bJune 2024.

Required Experience and Skills

  • Experience performing lab-based research/process development in a chemistry or chemical engineering-related area

  • Highly effective communication and collaboration skills

  • Good organizational, interpersonal, writing, and time management skills

Preferred Experience and Skills

  • Direct experience with pharmaceutical drug development

  • Experience working on pilot plant or production-scale

  • Experience with chemistry or chemical engineering-related technology development, such as flow chemistry, electrochemistry, photochemistry, or other technologies

  • Experience with analytical tools such as IR Spectroscopy/LCMS/HPLC

U.S. Hybrid Work Model

Effective September 5, 2023, employees in office-based positions in the U.S. will be working a Hybrid work consisting of three total days on-site per week, generally Tuesday, Wednesday and either Monday or Thursday, although the specific days may vary by site or organization, with Friday designated as a remote-working day, unless business critical tasks require an on-site presence.  This Hybrid work model does not apply to, and daily in-person attendance is required for, field-based positions; facility-based, manufacturing-based, or research-based positions where the work to be performed is located at a Company site; positions covered by a collective-bargaining agreement (unless the agreement provides for hybrid work); or any other position for which the Company has determined the job requirements cannot be reasonably met working remotely. Under New York State, Colorado State, Washington State, and California State law, the Company is required to provide a reasonable estimate of the salary range for this job. Final determinations with respect to salary will take into account a number of factors, which may include, but not be limited to the primary work location and the chosen candidate’s relevant skills, experience, and education.

Expected salary range:

$111,400.00 - $175,300.00
