Job Description
The industrialized world cannot function without steel. It is essential to everything from the buildings we live into the ways we get around. The steel value chain will play a pivotal role in the global energy transition and will be an integral part of solar panels, wind turbines, electric vehicles, dams, etc. In parallel, the industry will also create opportunities for newer technologies and energy products, especially hydrogen, as it decarbonizes.
Industry stakeholders across the steel and raw materials value chain will need to understand the key drivers and trends impacting the industry in the near and long term. Miners, steelmakers, traders, logistics providers, investment banks, and financial institutions must be well-versed in research and analytics for more informed decision-making.
Wood Mackenzie is looking for a Senior Analyst to join its Steel & Raw Materials Markets team focusing on Metallurgical Coal demand, supply, trade, pricing, and climate scenario analysis.
The Senior Analyst - Metallurgical Coal Markets will apply solid analytical capabilities and knowledge of Metallurgical Coal market to enhance Wood Mackenzie's analysis and services to customers.
Reporting directly to the Head of Steel and Raw Materials, you will be responsible for understanding our client's interests and providing frequent, thorough, and precise written analysis as part of our publication schedules and perceptive Insights providing innovative and original views on industry developments. The analyst will communicate regularly with clients, sharing our views and engaging in mutually beneficial dialogue.
Key Responsibilities
  • Apply solid analytical capabilities and knowledge to maintain proprietary country models.
  • Monitor frequent developments in the sector.
  • Provide insightful market analysis on Metallurgical Coal prices for our short and long-term reports.
  • Regularly produce differentiated market analysis and industry thought leadership pieces.
  • Establish and maintain contacts within the industry stakeholders to acquire proprietary data and knowledge.
  • Develop and maintain productive relationships with industry contacts and research clients, including presentation to clients via various deliverables, necessitating international travel.
  • Effectively communicate analysis findings to clients through written deliverables, webcalls, podcasts, conferences and face-to-face presentations.
  • Participate in supporting sales and marketing activities including events
  • Respond to client enquiries and ad hoc requests in a timely and professional manner
  • Collaborate and work with our consultancy business on periodic projects.
  • Work closely with colleagues in allied groups including but not limited to Energy Transition Practice to help shape the company's integrated view.

Qualifications
  • Degree-qualified in a relevant discipline (e.g. Mining/ Geology/ Metallurgical Engineering or Economics/ Business etc.).
  • Detailed knowledge of steel, coal, and the wider metals industry.
  • Excellent numerical analytic capabilities, including problem solving and technical skills in Excel.
  • Presentation experience.
  • An ability to write concisely and drawing out key points.
  • Strong organisation and planning skills plus the ability to manage own workload.
  • The ability to work as part of a team which may involve multiple locations and time zones.
  • Good networked in the industry with contacts across the value chain.
  • A strong commitment to commercial excellence and meeting the high-quality standards expected by our clients.
  • You have a willingness to travel as necessitated by the role.
