Position Purpose

The Sr. Research AnalystFoundation Relations plays a pivotal role in advancing the mission of the OHSU Foundation by serving as a strategic partner and liaison to the Foundation Relations team. This role is primarily responsible for identifying and assessing new and existing private foundations and organizational prospects and donors to inform strategies for seeking funding for OHSU, with a particular focus on assessing giving potential from qualified leads, preparing prospect profiles in partnership with the Foundation Relations team, and tracking and managing requests from faculty and academic initiatives.

What You’ll Be Doing

Prospect Triage and Research

You will be responsible for fielding, triaging and researching private foundation prospects and organizations for faculty projects, university needs, and development officer requests (in collaboration with AVP, Foundation Relations). You will also conduct detailed research using a variety of sources (including internal resources, paid databases, internet searches, media sources and more), and create detailed organizational profiles that provide informed guidance to both OHSUF leaders/stakeholders and OHSU faculty/leaders. Finally, you will provide customized, actionable research and information to aid in identification, qualification, cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship of Foundation Relations donor prospects, and will provide timely and appropriate responses to stakeholders through the support requests and research queue.


Prospect Identification and Management

You will develop strategies for generating and maintaining a dynamic prospect pool for Foundation Relations development officers and proactively seek new principal and major gift prospects through data mining and other techniques. You will identify, qualify, assess, rank, and prioritize potential major and principal gift foundation or corporate donor prospects (proactively and by request) through the use of wealth screening, media, and other research tools, and interpreting and segmenting prospects You will also partner with development staff to keep apprised of fundraising initiatives to inform prospecting efforts. Finally, you will complete special projects as identified, focusing mostly on principal gift level foundation prospects and donors


Other Projects

You will ensure data integrity for all information relevant to prospect research and information, performing routine data integrity error checks. You will also manage other duties as assigned in support of the foundation’s research efforts.

Who You Are

Skills and Competencies:

  • You demonstrate a clear understanding of development and major gifts fundraising and its role in supporting development efforts through research and prospect management.
  • Your research skills are advanced, involving in-depth knowledge and extensive use of online reference and information systems, libraries, data screening products, and other reference materials and tools. You have mastered the analysis of foundation financial data and SEC data.
  • You have expertise in collecting, analyzing, interpreting, and evaluating information, with the ability to synthesize complex data from multiple sources to provide informed guidance.
  • You have a grasp of various screening strategies and methodologies, including data mining, segmentation, and analytics.
  • You have strong interpersonal skills and cultural competency, enabling professional, diplomatic, and productive collaboration with diverse colleagues and contacts, including development officers.
  • You have excellent judgement; you recognize when to take the lead and when to step back and seek further clarification.
  • You possess strong written communication skills and meticulous attention to detail.
  • You excel at prioritizing tasks and consistently meeting deadlines.


Experience

We want to emphasize that there is no such thing as the perfect candidate; candidates who do not have all of the required experience are encouraged to apply. We may fill this position at the Research Analyst level for those who do not have 5+ total years of relevant experience.

Required Experience

  • 5-7 years in a development research office or related experience, preferably in healthcare, higher education or complex non-profit environment
  • Experience with principal-gift level and/or Foundation Relations or corporate strategy development, research, and prospecting
  • Experience working in a relational database
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce Affinaquest
  • Experience with prospect research resources such as DonorSearch, Relationship Science, Lexis-Nexis, Candid (Foundation Directory Online and Guidestar), and Blackbaud Giving

Preferred Experience

  • Advanced skills in Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, and Powerpoint
  • Experience with Raiser’s Edge or Salesforce Affinaquest
  • Experience with Foundation research resources such as Candid (Foundation Directory Online and Guidestar), NOZA, DonorSearch, or Relationship Science

Working Environment:

  • Can be a 100% remote position with minimal travel to OHSU, Portland office on occasion/as requested
  • Occasional hours outside of normal work hours for meetings or programs
  • Prolonged use of computer

Pay and Benefits

  • Salary is dependent on experience. Each salary band is broken into three "steps," which correspond with an employee’s experience/tenure, proficiency and performance in that specific role. New employees will typically start at step I of our pay band to allow for later growth, although more experienced candidates may be eligible to start at step II or III. The OHSU Foundation has a structured process for determining starting compensation, taking into account years of related experience, applicable skills, knowledge and abilities, market parity, and internal equity.
