Brief Job Overview
The Senior Manager, Foods - Science and Standards is a scientific and supervisory position responsible for the activities of the Foods Documentary Standards Team contributing to all aspects of the Food Chemicals Codex (FCC). This includes strategy, prioritization of topics, overseeing development of standards, and related activities, support of Expert Volunteer Activities, participation in cross-functional teams and collaboration within and outside of USP. They will mentor direct reports and manage performance, as well as participate in and lead other department activities.
• Lead strategic activities including topic prioritization.
• Provide leadership and supervise scientists developing standards for the Food Chemicals Codex and related activities.
• Work with expert committee members and expert panel members on topics relevant to monograph development and other issues.
• Act as a management reviewer for colleagues in FCC and other groups as appropriate.
• Collaborate with USP Laboratory and other colleagues as needed to move projects forward.
This position is hybrid and will require 40-60% onsite per month at the Rockville, MD USP headquarters.

• Ability to establish and nurture relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds and learning styles.
• Provide leadership to scientists working in FCC monograph and general tests and assays (GTA) methods development.
• Maintain the highest quality of science as the foundation of USP's FCC Monograph and GTA development process.
• Manage the performance of staff, provide effective coaching, and develop/implement training and development plans to ensure the success and growth of staff.
• Establish goals and metrics for the team, ensuring alignment with the program unit goals and organizational goals, and evaluates performance against established goals.
• Manage staff workload, deliverables and output and provide updates to leadership.
• Work closely with the Food Ingredients Expert Committee, USP volunteers, and engages with external stakeholders to further the development of FCC standards.
• Collaboratively lead cross-functional teams working with USP staff, USP volunteers, consultants, regulators, industry, and other external stakeholders.
• Collaborate with expert committee managers (ECMs) and Expert Committee Scientific Leads (ECSLs) to facilitate interactions with the various expert committees, volunteers and USP staff.
• Collaborate with USP Laboratory and other colleagues as needed to move projects forward.
• Represent USP/FCC at scientific conferences/meetings, outreach visits and other events sponsored by USP and/or food/food ingredients industry and regulatory agencies.
• Prepare manuscripts for publication by USP (e.g., FCC stimuli articles) or in peer-reviewed journals.
• Participate in the development and/or review of FCC's professional education course materials and may serve as an instructor, as needed.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Basic Qualifications:
• Ph.D. with 10 years, or an MS degree with 15 years in Food Chemistry, Food Science, or related field with relevant industry experience.
• A minimum of 4 years' experience supervising, leading teams, and mentoring staff members.
• Experience and knowledge of food ingredients and food additives and the associated regulatory framework is essential.
• Demonstrated ability to communicate complex ideas clearly and concisely.
• Strong presentation and communication skills (written and oral).
• Able to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment.
Additional Desired Preferences
• Able to establish and nurture relationships with individuals of varying backgrounds, cultures and learning styles.
• Experience with developing monographs and general tests and assay methods.
• Experience in one or more of the following areas is desirable: food chemicals, food additives, food ingredients, regulatory affairs, food ingredients analysis, biochemical analysis, food/dairy/industrial microbiology, and analysis.
• Demonstrated research, technical, and analytical skills, as well as the ability to take highly technical scientific information and make strategic recommendations quickly.
• Strong practical knowledge of modern analytical techniques including their development, validation, and application to the testing of food ingredients/food additives.
• Ability to review, analyze, interpret and report effectively on data from various analytical tests.
• Ability to share technical information with technical and non-scientific staff, and to communicate effectively with representatives from food companies, trade associations, government, and academic institutions.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, including ability to develop and deliver presentations to Senior Management and the entire organization.
• Knowledge of global regulatory requirements and guidance (e.g., FDA, CODEX, JECFA, FAO, WHO, EFSA) relevant to food ingredients, foods, and dairy products.
• Ability to operate independently where appropriate yet understands when to escalate issues and how to establish effective working relationships.
• Well-developed organizational, interpersonal communications, negotiation, and listening skills.
• Ability to lead in a fast-paced environment with changing deadlines and priorities.
Supervisory Responsibilities
Yes. Directly manages a team of 4 senior scientists/principal scientist (food chemistry/ food scientists).
