Job description

Under the general direction of an Information Technology Manager I (ITM I), the Information Technology Specialist II (ITS II) serves as a Senior Lead Network Engineer supporting the Caltrans Enterprise Network and Traffic Operations network. The ITS II is based in the Sacramento Headquarters office and provides statewide support and leadership for Caltrans business operations. The ITS II will work independently, as well as part of a team of Network Engineers providing leadership and expertise for the administrative and technical design of the Caltrans Enterprise Network, including the Wide Area Network (WAN), Metropolitan Area Network (MAN), Local Area Network (LAN), and all network services. The ITS II will be working in a team environment with a wide array of networking equipment, including routers, switches, firewalls, wireless controllers, wireless access points, data center infrastructure, load balancers, access control appliances, remote access appliances, and network monitoring and management systems. The ITS II provides support for network access control for enterprise network and traffic operations network.

Working Conditions
This position is located in Sacramento.
The incumbent will perform work indoors under artificial lighting. The incumbent may be required to work for extended periods of time in a computer room. This position may be eligible for telework. The amount of telework is at the discretion of the Department and based on Caltrans's evolving telework policy. Caltrans supports telework, recognizing that in-person attendance may be required based on operational needs. Employees are expected to be able to report to their worksites with minimum notification if an urgent need arises. The selected candidate will be required to commute to the headquartered location as needed to meet operational needs. Business travel may be required, and reimbursement considers an employee's designated headquartered location, primary residence, and may be subject to CalHR regulations or applicable bargaining unit contract provisions. All commute expenses to the headquartered location will be the responsibility of the selected candidate.
The incumbent may be required to travel to other Caltrans offices to support and provide expertise for IT operations.
The incumbent may work after regular business hours and/or weekends to perform activities to support business operations and/or systems maintenance.
The incumbent must carry a cell phone and respond to calls after hours to lead multi-disciplinary IT professional team(s) in organizing, analyzing, troubleshooting and resolving IT system problems.
New to State candidates will be hired into the minimum salary of the classification or minimum of alternate range when applicable.

  • Describe your ability to work cooperatively and communicate professionally and effectively with all levels of clients, staff, and management.
  • Describe and provide examples of your experience leading IT projects, managing multiple and changing priorities, and communicating with a variety of individuals and stakeholders.
  • Describe your experience related to the installation, configuration, and support of network access control equipment and software, routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, or other network devices.
    • Possession of a valid driver's license is required when operating a state owned or leased vehicle.
