As the Government Finance Officers Association (GFOA) evolves to meet the dynamic training requirements of our members, our educational programs are expanding significantly. With a robust portfolio of training initiatives encompassing online, in-person instructor-led, and on-demand (asynchronous) programs tailored for government finance professionals, GFOA is in search of a seasoned, resourceful, and results-driven Senior Instructional Designer.

In this role, the Senior Instructional Designer will collaborate closely with the Director of Education and subject matter experts to ensure that instructional design and adult learning principles are integrated into GFOA educational offerings. The ideal candidate will have strong technology skills and experience in developing, enhancing, reimagining, repurposing, and expanding existing educational programs.

The position is based in Chicago and you will be expected to work in the office up to 2 to 3 days a week. There is flexibility for hybrid work.

General Responsibilities

• Work collaboratively with internal SMEs, volunteers, and contract trainers to enhance existing technical finance and accounting content into engaging, impactful learning experiences delivered in person, virtually, in blended and eLearning environments.
• Use emerging Education technologies (i.e., authoring tools, LMS, AI, etc.) to create effective training programs.
• Assist in crafting sustainable and scalable training options that align with GFOA’s mission to meet our members’ and constituents’ diverse learning needs throughout their career journey.
• Apply instructional design principles to ensure engaging instructor-led training programs, both in-person and virtual, along with hybrid learning options and just-in-time training offerings.
• Develop systems to evaluate curricula and course structures using Kirkpatrick’s Evaluation Model (levels 1-4).

Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

• Exhibit strong collaboration skills with colleagues, learning stakeholders, and SMEs—internal and external volunteers.
• Demonstrate application of instructional design theory and best practices, including adult learning and development theory and methodologies.
• Quickly design and develop learning content in a rapidly changing environment.
• Use the latest education technology design tools to translate written content into visual descriptions or deliverables (graphics, audio, interactive charts, graphs, and video-based scenarios).
• Work with internal and external SMEs to identify, source, or prepare content for delivery to an external eLearning developer for the design and development of asynchronous courses.

Salary Range

$90,000-$120,000 (based on experience)

Requirements:

Required Education and Experience (an equivalent amount of training, education, and experience will be considered)

• The ideal candidate will possess instructional design experience in a relevant field, with a proven ability to design various training applications for various delivery methods and audiences. Prefer a minimum of 3-5 years' experience.
• Provide a diverse portfolio of learning solutions designed and developed, including instructor-led, web-based, hybrid, blended learning, and mobile delivery.
• Require BA/BS. Prefer MS/MA in relevant field.
