Job Description
The Utah Department of Transportation is looking for a talented and experienced engineer to join their team as a Senior Hydraulics Engineer (Engineer IV) with the Region One office in Ogden, Utah.
This is a senior level engineering position. As a Senor Hydraulics Engineer, you will provide technical support to internal and external customers in designing and analyzing roadway drainage systems. You will serve as a design lead for the Region on storm drain network design, hydrology, detention/retention basin design, bridge scour evaluation and mitigation, and culvert and open channel flow design. You will provide support to Construction and Maintenance personnel for roadway drainage issues.
Principal Duties
As a Senior Hydraulics Engineer, you will help produce quality plans and provide oversight on projects done by our consultant partners. In this position you will:
  • Be a design lead for the Region on roadway drainage design and analysis for successful project delivery.
  • Design and prepare biddable plans, engineer's estimates and special provisions for construction projects.
  • Teach and train others in best practices and use of hydraulic engineering software.
  • Provide training, mentoring, and leadership to junior roadway designers and hydraulic designers.
  • Write specifications and compile advertising plan packages, calculate quantities, volumes, and cost estimates, prepare reports, and participate in public involvement.
  • Work with, coordinate, and supervise consultants, or contract employees, in the performance of the contracted duties.
  • Provide plan set review for drainage on encroachment permit applications.
  • Complete other duties as assigned.

The Ideal Candidate
The best qualified candidate will:
  • Have an active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah in accordance with the provisions of Utah Code Annotated 58-22.
  • Have 2 years of professional engineering experience post Professional Engineer licensure.
  • Have strong verbal and written communication skills.
  • Be familiar with the principles and practices of civil engineering; pertinent laws, rules and regulations.
  • Be familiar with Openroads Designer and other hydraulic software such as: SRH2D, HEC-RAS and FHWA Hydraulic Toolbox.
  • Be creative and innovative, exercising sound professional judgment in advanced engineering techniques and theories.
  • Have strong management/leadership skills and professionalism in working with customers.

This position may be filled at the Engineer III level (salary range $35.49 - $57.56) or the Engineer II level (salary range $32.57 - $54.53) for applicants without a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah and 2 years professional engineering experience.
For the Engineer III level, the ideal candidates will have:
  • An active Professional Engineer (PE) license in Utah in accordance with the provisions of Utah code Annotated 58.22.

For the Engineer II level, the ideal candidates will have:
  • A Bachelor's degree in engineering and,
  • Proof of passing the Fundamentals of Engineering Exam (FE) and,
  • Completed at least two years of post-graduate engineering experience. (A Master's degree, in a related field, may be considered for one year of post-graduate experience.
