Job description

The Manh Choh Project is a greenfield gold deposit in eastern Alaska being developed with ore being hauled to Kinross’ Fort Knox mine north of Fairbanks for processing. The mine site is located in the Tetlin Hills, approximately 250 miles southeast of Fort Knox and 10 miles southeast of Tok. Production is expected to begin in 2024.

Job Summary

Promote activities designed to maintain and improve safety awareness throughout the mine property. Support implementation of policies and procedures under the Health & Safety programs. Foster a collaborative safety culture across departments and advise site leadership as needed.
Assist in safety audits and field engagements under the Kinross Gold Corporation Environmental and Health and Safety Management System.  
Provide support and oversite of Kinross Manh Choh MSHA inspections and investigations including collaboration with business partners. Assist with oversight of and exercises of the Emergency Response Team and Program. Collaboration with the onsite medical staff and act as a liaison with offsite medical director and case management.
 

Job Responsibilities
  • Assist in the administration of the sites Industrial Hygiene activities, monitoring performance of contractors IH programs and systems.                        
  • Assist in the development and implementation of appropriate controls for identified risks.    
  • Assist in evaluating, maintaining or creating Health and Safety SOPs, manuals, programs, including IH policies and procedures.    
  • Assists with development and implementation of emergency preparedness activities. 
  • Take a Lead Role with the Critical Risk Management Program by providing support to risk owners, training, new risk development, deep dive reviews and overall continuous improvement of the program.
  • Spend adequate time in the field to encourage use and implementation of Kinross Health and Safety programs.
  • Participate or represent the company during MSHA interactions. Coordinate abatement of any citations and complete the proper reports.
  • Oversee the development of the necessary emergency response capabilities, including business partner oversite and direct leadership and collaboration with onsite medical staff.
  • Take a leadership role in implementing joint Manh Choh MERP including related business partners.
  • Ensure compliance to all Health and Safety standards by all employees including Business Partner personnel.
  • Conduct training of employees for Health and Safety systems and MSHA required training.
  • Meets or exceeds established performance expectations set by management.
  • Consistently exercises discretion and judgment in job performance.
  • Able to mentor/coach members of the team both Kinross and Business Partners as a Safety Professional.
Education and Experience

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent required. Bachelor’s degree in industrial hygiene or occupational safety and health preferred. 


Experience

  • Employee must have sufficient education to read and write instructions, perform simple mathematical calculations, and keep records.
  • General understanding of mining operations as well as limited understanding of milling and maintenance operations.
  • Working knowledge and skill with P.C. utilizing Word programs, Excel, JDE and presentation software.
  • Strong verbal, written, analytical and persuasive skills and the ability to interact effectively with all levels of employees and management.
  • Ability to work independently. 
  • Demonstrates strong administrative, organizational and technical writing skills
  • Must possess an MSHA instructor certification.  
  • Must possess or have the capability of obtaining CIH or OHST certification.
  • Ability to function within the qualifications outlined in the attached physical demands sheets.
  • Must possess a valid drivers license.
  • Must be available for shift work, overtime, holidays, and weekends as needed.
  • Health and Safety background with five or more years of experience.
  • Leadership abilities to act as department lead/head when necessary.

  • Wears Personal Protective Equipment at all times while in the production environment. 
  • Is alert and observes, corrects, and reports unsafe conditions.
