As a key operational player within Duke Energy, the Grid Engineer ensures the safe, reliable operation of the Distribution system while also supporting transformative initiatives to improve the customer experience. The Grid Engineer assesses and directs the operations performed on the Distribution system in Duke Energy Florida. Key skills in this position for success are clear, direct communication, technical expertise, and strategic planning for future operations and growth.
This position will be located at the Distribution Control Center (DCC) in St. Petersburg, FL and reports to the Manager of Grid Management. This position will be responsible for supporting distribution automation (Self-Healing Teams, ATS, VMS, DMS, IVVC, Sensors), outage coordination, service restoration, switching and tagging, and major equipment operations for the Duke Energy Florida Distribution system. Grid Management supports a 24/7 Distribution Control Center and the incumbent may be required to be on-call from time to time. This position will evaluate system operations while coordinating with planning engineering, field operations employees, and management. The Grid Engineer is responsible for making recommendations and leading improvements that optimize the performance of the distribution grid.
This is the career/senior level of the Engineering classification. This position provides engineering/technical expertise to solve more complex problems and leadership skills to provide oversight and direction of work in a specific area of expertise, with some supervision. Incumbents are expected to develop advanced skills and the ability to work with greater independence.
Major Job Duties and Responsibilities:
  • Provides engineering/technical expertise and guidance in the identification, analysis and resolution of problems of increasing scope and complexity in both inside as well as outside the scope of typical responsibility.
  • Ensures accomplishment of business goals and objectives through effective planning, organizing, estimating, scheduling, and monitoring of work activities; decisions may affect the operations or results of the work group and may have some impact on major projects or department results.
  • Prepares thorough and accurate technical reports, correspondence, documentation, calculations and sketches related to well-defined problems and analysis of moderate scope and complexity.
  • Conducts engineering and related studies; projects and assignments are clearly defined with focus on development but must be able to complete routine engineering projects with minimal oversight; competent to design, operate and maintain systems with minimum impact on existing systems.
  • Possesses and applies the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures; demonstrates proficiency in technical competencies and has ability to interpret technical information and instructions.
  • Develops positive working relationships to effectively coordinate work activities. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication skills. Maintains accurate records and files.
  • Supports the company's goals and represents the company positively and professionally.

Basic Qualifications:
Senior Engineer
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 6 years of engineering experience or 5 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Engineer III
  • Graduation from a four-year college or university with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering from an ABET accredited program. A Master's degree in engineering will be considered in lieu of the B. S. engineering degree.
  • Minimum of 4 years of engineering experience or 3 years of engineering experience with state registration as a Professional Engineer.
  • Proficient in engineering theories and principles.
  • Proficient in practices of researching engineering and design issues, evaluating alternatives, making sound recommendations, and preparing and presenting recommendations.
  • Ability to deal with a variety of individuals from various socio-economic, cultural, and ethnic backgrounds.
  • Demonstrated effective written and oral communication skills.
  • Valid Driver's License.

Desired Qualifications:
  • State registration as a Professional Engineer (PE).
  • Degree in Electrical Engineering
  • Experience in the utility industry
  • Knowledge of electric distribution systems engineering
  • Ability to perform load flow calculations
  • Ability to evaluate complex electrical modeling and respond to emergencies of system level outages or operational concerns
  • Knowledge of substation equipment operations and protection
  • Proficient in principles of project management

Working Conditions:
  • Hybrid - Work will be performed from both remote and onsite locations after the onboarding period. Hybrid employees should live within a reasonable commute to the designated Duke Energy facility.
  • This position is expected to be on-call, as needed, and available to respond to operational needs after hours and on the weekends, as needed.
  • This position is expected to have a storm role, which requires working extended hours to meet operational needs.
