Job description

POSITION OVERVIEW
Under the direction of the Chief Geologist, the Senior Geologist is responsible for all geologic functions of the operation, including field mapping, maintaining mine geological databases and block models, monitoring daily mined rock types, designing, and implementing the diamond core and RC drilling programs. The Senior Geologist is also responsible for generating and updating new block models, performing detailed geostatistics and data analysis, and overseeing all blast holes and exploration sampling QA/QC programs. The Senior Geologist actively participates in the investigation and analysis of geologic-related issues such as pit slope stability, hydrology, mill recovery and throughput, ore control, and problematic ore occurrences.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS (List at least 10)
• Supervise and mentor geologic staff, implement all geological functions of operation, and effectively communicate results to the Engineering Manager and Management.
• Identify blast hole rock types for entry into the dispatch database on a daily basis.
• Manage and analyze geologic data and apply geologic findings to operational issues such as ore control and mine planning.
• Maintain, update, and analyze the Mission blast hole and exploration QA-QC databases.
• Maintain and continuously improve the existing rock and assay models and participate in constructing new models as needed.
• Conduct reconciliation of resource models to blast hole, mine, and mill data to improve forecasting tools.
• Maintain a program of geologic mapping of key pit faces.
• Assist in implementing mission drilling programs, including the program's design, preparation of bid proposals, and program management for target evaluation and cost requirements. The latter also includes responsibility for site preparation and logging all diamond drill core and RC chips for rock and mineral types, structure, alteration, and rock mass strength criteria.
• In coordination with the Engineering Department, offer geologic input to analyze geomechanical issues and maintain an effective pit slope monitoring system. Redesign the system as priorities and conditions change.
• Participate in continuously improving practices and procedures in the Engineering Department.
• Communicate effectively and represent the Mission Mine when interacting with the public by giving tours and geologic presentations.
ADDITIONAL DUTIES (Optional)
• Maintain required training in the area of environmental awareness.
• Maintain required training in the area of safety and health awareness, including MSHA training.
• Other duties as assigned.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES
• Strong interpersonal skills in developing consensus-building.
• Must have excellent computer skills with MS Windows, MS Word, MS Excel, and MS Outlook.
• Working knowledge of AutoCAD, MinePlan, Leapfrog, or similar related mine planning software.
• Must be able to manage time effectively and set priorities.
• Requires the ability to manage multiple tasks.
• Working knowledge of statistics, geostatistics, and basic engineering principles is required.
• Must have experience in mine geology with good mapping and rock-type identification skills.
• Must have a valid driver's license.
• Must be able to perform fieldwork, walk over rough terrain, sit, stand, bend, and climb stairs/ladders.
• Must be able to communicate and have good presentation skills.
REQUIRED EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
• Requires a minimum of seven (7) years of directly related geology experience with a demonstrated record of successful project, technical, and managerial growth and achievement.
• A bachelor's degree in geology or related field.
