The Stanford Center for Professional Development (SCPD), part of the School of Engineering (SoE), is seeking a Senior Director, Learning Assessment and Research to lead the evaluation and Assessment and return on education (ROE) of online learning initiatives, using datasets spanning from free courses (MOOCs) to degrees. Reporting to the CTO for SCPD and Stanford Online, this role partners with internal and external clients including senior leaders and faculty regarding the analysis, continuous improvement and application of best practices to online learning.
This role needs to stay at the cutting edge of learning research and ed tech to help SCPD keep pace with the ever changing landscape. The ed tech space has seen expansive growth and massive investment in the last decade with the rise of companies like Coursera and 2U. For SCPD and Stanford to keep up, we need this role to lead the design and development of multiple research projects using state-of-the-art machine learning models, algorithms, statistical models, and other programs designed to improve the education sector. These projects may include using data from surveys, focus groups, experiments, case studies and other resources for information.

Your responsibilities include:
  • Provide strategic planning for own work group; participate with senior managers in higher level strategic planning. Communicate operational objectives and assignments and delegate to staff.
  • Manage the daily operations of assigned area(s) which include recruiting, hiring, training, developing, evaluating and setting priorities of staff; coordinate business, technical, and educational activities for direct reports.
  • Oversee interdepartmental activities, projects and efforts by applying advanced technical and professional knowledge. Serve as the initial managerial escalation point for problems from clients and other staff.
  • Manage project budgets, schedules, and resources. Oversee preparation of periodic financial and technical reports and operating plans.
  • Interface with clients to determine project requirements. Establish service level agreements with clients.
  • Monitor scientific, engineering and/or technology trends and evaluate emerging technologies to recommend for adoption and implementation.
  • Communicate and implement policies, procedures, best practices, recommendations and guidelines in compliance with established University administrative policies and procedures.

Education & Experience (Required):
  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience. Advanced degree may be required.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities (Required):
  • Experience leading or overseeing the work of technical staff.
  • Understanding of relevant scientific, engineering, or technical disciplines.
  • Ability to problem solve.
  • Ability to synthesize and articulate technical and scientific methodologies, specifications, and information.
  • Experience leading scientific, engineering, or technical research projects or programs.
  • Knowledge of emerging technologies, trends, methodologies, and resource management principles.
  • Ability to work and communicate effectively with others.
  • Strong customer relationship and consensus building skills.
  • Ability to influence and establish effective working relationships in a diverse environment.
  • Ability to resolve issues quickly and make decisions that meet university objectives in a collaborative culture.

Education & Experience (Desired):
  • Demonstrated experience querying, processing, analyzing, and reporting on large data sets.
  • Ability to use data retrieval and manipulation tools such as SQL, Brio Query, Business Objects, etc. in conjunction with visual data tools to present data clearly to non-technical audiences.
  • Familiarity and experience with intermediate statistical methods; advanced proficiency with statistical tools such as SPSS, SAS, R or similar tools.
  • Workplace training and education; organizational development practices; and ability to use knowledge and skills to plan effective organizational interventions
  • Knowledge of Learning Principles and the effectiveness of instructing methods such as classroom training, simulations, demonstrations, on-the-job training, meetings, conferences, workshops and online learning tools
  • Documented instructional design experience, specific to online learning.

Physical Requirements*:
  • Frequently perform desk based computer tasks, seated work, use a telephone and use light/ fine grasping.
  • Occasionally write by hand, lift, carry, push pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Rarely stand, walk, sort, and file paperwork or parts.

Pay Range:
The expected pay range for this position is $142,000 to $169,000 annually. Stanford University provides pay ranges representing its good faith estimate of what the university reasonably expects to pay for a position. The pay offered to a selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as (but not limited to) the scope and responsibilities of the position, the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal equity, geographic location and external market pay for comparable jobs.
