Job description

Novant Health is seeking a Chief Nursing Officer (CNO). The CNO has overall authority for providing leadership, direction, and administration of direct patient care activities, nursing practice, and nursing education and development for the hospital. The CNO is responsible for driving, supporting and modeling a culture focused on employee engagement, quality, patient safety, fiscal responsibility, and the overall patient experience. This position will be responsible for the overall clinical operations and quality improvements for the Matthews Medical Center and all operating divisions for that location. Matthews Medical Center is a 157 bed hospital and will be expanding to 215 beds within the year. 


 

  • Education:  Bachelor’s Degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in nursing or related field required
  • Licensure: Current Registered Nurse (RN) licensure in appropriate state required
  • Experience: Minimum of (5) years leadership experience in a similar facility with multiple unit responsibilities required
  • Certification: Nurse Executive Advance Board Certification (NEA-BC) preferred. Candidate must be willing to attain speciality nuring leadership certification within one year of hire. 
  • Additional Skills Required: Must have experience and current working knowledge of personnel management, adult education learning theory, program design and development, and administrative and supervisory skills in a healthcare setting. Computer analysis of staffing. Strong financial leadership and information technology skills. Has knowledge and skills necessary to manage care according to patient’s age. Must have strong leadership skills such as proactive communication, decision-making skills, creativity, cooperation, independent judgment, ability to delegate, adaptability, perseverance, high energy level and a strong work ethic. Must have ability to initiate, implement and evaluate change process.

 

Core Processes and Activities

  • Directs and evaluates any and all management operations related to: Quality Indicators, HCAPS/CMS, Joint Commission, DHSR and Effectiveness in the accomplishment of objectives and goals established for facility and corporate operations and projects.
  • Reviews results and recommends actions in coordination with corporate goals.
  • Presents to leadership outcomes and plan for continued growth and improvement.
  • Exercises extreme discretion in review of all records and information to ensure confidentiality of all matters.
  • Participate with leaders from the Governing Body, Senior Leadership, Medical Staff and clinical areas in health system’s decision-making structures and processes.
  • Participate in developing and implementing the system’s plan for providing patient care consistent with the system’s mission, goals, values and strategic plan. Participate with leaders from the governing body, senior leadership, medical staff and clinical areas in planning, promoting and conducting organization-wide performance assessment and improvement activities.
  • Focuses on long term objectives and considers future implications of today’s decisions.
  • Seeks to optimize the bigger picture.
  • Demonstrates constancy of purpose.

  • Participates in activities outside the facility which promote / provide community benefit as well as provide increased exposure for Hospital. Pursues continuing and / or formal education and maintains professional affiliations to further career development and understanding of the health care / business environment as evidenced by completed education and seminar hours and professional group participation.

Clinical Oversight and Quality Improvement:

  • Stabilizes and continually improves the core processes of the area of responsibility.
  • Assures quality is monitored and opportunities for improvement are identified, tested, and implemented as appropriate.
  • Manages the interdependence of processes both within and external to the department.
  • Communicates the status of core processes of the area of responsibility and the system.
  • Judges successes on qualitative as well as quantitative measures.
  • Develop organization wide patient care programs, policies and procedures that describe how patients’ nursing care needs or patient populations receiving nursing care are assessed, evaluated and met; Develop and implement the organization’s plans for providing nursing care to those patients requiring nursing care; Participate with governing body, management , medical staff and clinical leaders in the organization's decision-making structures and processes; and Implement an effective, ongoing program to measure, assess and improve the quality of nursing care delivered to patients.
