About the Role

The Senior Developer, Graphics will play a crucial role in the growing data viz efforts of The Athletic’s new graphics team. You will bring The Athletic’s journalism to life — on our website, app, social media and more.

In this role, you can expect to work closely with designers, editors, reporters and engineers to create interactive storytelling experiences and destinations that inform readers through data visualization and expert analysis. You’ll contribute to team style guides and libraries, inform tooling for reusable features, use data to aid in-depth storytelling and help build and maintain evergreen experiences. 

To succeed, you should be an eager, hands-on, creative multitasker with the ability to collaborate and consistently produce compelling interactive, data-driven solutions. You should be patient and flexible, willing to dive into any stage of a project to help level up the work. You should be perceptive and detail-oriented with a great mind for conceptual thinking and realizing the vision of the project at hand. 

This role will report to The Athletic’s Director, Graphics and is a fully remote position.

This role is fully remote for candidates located in the United States or Canada only.

Responsibilities

  • Build evergreen, data-driven destinations.

  • Collaborate with cross-functional newsroom, engineering and product partners to ensure continuity across platforms and publishing spaces.

  • Ideate with the team to maintain The Athletic’s high-caliber storytelling and visual identity. 

  • Thrive in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. 

Requirements

  • At least 4 years of experience, including time working as a developer in a newsroom or similar environment.

  • Experience working on concurrent, on-going projects.

  • Experience building interactive graphics or Web sites.

  • Experience working and collaborating with Product and Engineering teams.

  • A deep knowledge of and an appreciation for journalism, design and data, including data analysis languages and methods of acquiring data, like coding and scraping.

  • The ability to shape data-based journalism using innovative approaches to storytelling.

  • An outstanding portfolio showcasing relevant work.

  • Strong interpersonal, project management, presentation, leadership and communication skills.

  • The ability to adapt and think quickly when projects change, timelines shift or scopes vary. 

The annual base salary range for this role is $140,000.00 - $160,000.00 USD. The total compensation offered for this position may vary based on factors such as education, experience, skills, and location. It may also include non-cash rewards and benefits. The base salary range is subject to change and may be modified in the future.
