Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced and passionate Senior Data Engineer where you’ll play a key role in designing, building, and maintaining scalable data pipelines and infrastructure to support the organization's data needs. Leveraging your expertise in Data Engineering, software development, and cloud technologies, you will work closely with cross-functional teams to ensure the availability, reliability, and performance of data systems. You will also collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and business stakeholders to deliver high-quality, actionable insights that drive business value and innovation.

This is a generational opportunity to impact and influence the design and build out of our new Azure platform and back-office tooling. This platform will enable NCF to grow and scale in accomplishing our mission of seeing lives changed by mobilizing resources across literally thousands of Christian ministries through inspiring biblical generosity.

This position is hybrid based out of the office in Alpharetta, GA.

Reports to: Senior Director, Data & Analytics

Management/Supervision: None

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Functions may include database architecture, engineering, design, optimization, security, and administration; as well as data modeling, big data development, Extract, Transform, and Load (ETL) development, storage engineering, data warehousing, data provisioning and other similar roles
  • Responsibilities may include Platform-as-a-Service and Cloud solution with a focus on data stores and associated eco systems
  • Duties may include management of design services, providing sizing and configuration assistance, ensuring strict data quality, and performing needs assessments
  • Analyzes current business practices, processes and procedures as well as identifying future business opportunities for leveraging data storage and retrieval system capabilities
  • Manages relationships with software and hardware vendors to understand the potential architectural impact of different vendor strategies and data acquisition
  • May design schemas, write SQL or other data markup scripting and helps to support development of Analytics and Applications that build on top of data.
  • Selects, develops and evaluates personnel to ensure the efficient operation of the function
  • Researchs, evaluates, identifies alternative approaches, recommends, designs and codes efficient and effective solutions for challenging problems ranging from small to large work efforts for low to high complexity problems
  • Develops, tests, deploys and schedules complex ETL/ELT solutions to integrate multiple data asset across the organization
  • Complies with standards and guidelines related to the design, construction, testing and deployment activities as established by departmental and organizational standards
  • Demonstrates collaborative skills working within a project team of diverse skills and will bring communication skills including oral, written and presentation skills, creativity, and problem-solving skills to a challenging environment
  • Partners with other competency leads/ developers and support project planning, technical design, development, and solution deployment functions
  • Identifies opportunities in business processes, system capabilities and delivery methodologies for continuous improvement as applicable
  • Leads, mentors and develops development resources and provides project related directions
  • Acts in a technical SME role, supports development, QA, and production support teams in SDLC and operational activities

Education

  • A Bachelor’s degree in computer science, information systems, or other related field is required; equivalent experience in lieu of a degree is ok

Experience

  • 7+ years of experience with modern relational databases and other OLTP systems
  • 7+ years of experience working on commercially available software and/or financial platforms as a Data Engineer
  • 7+ years Advanced T-SQL coding, tuning and query optimization, especially within cloud-based data platforms such as Azure SQL Database
  • 3+ years of experience working with open data formats such as parquet and Delta Lake
  • 3+ years of experience building data pipelines in MPP tools such as Azure Data Factory, Databricks, Snowflake, or Synapse Analytics
  • 3+ years of experience designing and building enterprise data solutions in the cloud such as data lakes and data warehouses
  • 3+ years integrating with 3rd party SaaS systems through API or other modern connectivity
  • 3+ years implementing data solutions in the Microsoft Azure platform and familiarity with aligning to the Azure Well-Architected Framework
  • 1+ years of experience/knowledge of Power BI and data integration/sourcing aspects
  • 1+ years of exposure to leveraging Spark-based technology for Data Engineering with Spark SQL or PySpark experience preferred
  • Exposure to Microsoft Fabric a plus
  • Architecting code for efficiencies and technical limitations and adherence to standard SDLC processes such as CI/CD
  • Ability to use Asynchronous Programming to improve productivity

Knowledge Base

  • Proven aptitude for "real time" problem diagnosis and solving
  • Some working knowledge of charitable, non-profit, foundation, and/or donor related subject matters
  • Able to perform duties both independently and on a team
