This Senior Counsel will provide legal advice to internal clients throughout the enterprise and will be expected to exercise outstanding judgment, independently handle time-sensitive disputes involving policy limit demands and other complex claim scenarios, and present strategic recommendations to senior legal, claims and business leaders. This role will have a hybrid work arrangement, with the expectation of working in our Hartford, CT Home Office three days a week (Tuesday through Thursday).
Responsibilities:

  • Deliver comprehensive legal advice and training to internal clients related to extracontractual exposures and corporate litigation risk, with limited supervision.
  • Achieve favorable, cost-effective resolutions in litigation and pre-litigation disputes, including pursuit of appropriate risk transfer and other recovery opportunities.
  • Seek out opportunities to improve legal and financial outcomes, claim behaviors, and internal/external processes.
  • Select and manage competent outside counsel and litigation vendors, and focus on efficiently managing costs and budgets.
  • Develop and drive strategy in day-to-day case management, including implementation of effective settlement, mediation, arbitration, and ADR strategies; coordinate execution of such strategy with outside counsel as required.
  • Collaborate with paralegal and administrative staff on document retrieval and production, file maintenance, and day to day case management tasks.
  • Communicate effectively with clients, business partners, law department colleagues and managers, providing timely updates on significant case developments and changes to the broader legal environment.

Qualifications:
  • Minimum of five years of litigation practice experience; experience with insurance bad faith litigation strongly preferred; experience with class action defense and other complex corporate litigation preferred.
  • Litigation experience within national or regional law firm preferred; experience in a similar litigation role within a Fortune 200 company law department considered.
  • Ability to build strong, strategic partnerships with business clients throughout the enterprise and colleagues throughout the Law Department.
  • Superior writing, editing, and oral communication skills.
  • Collaborative, team-oriented work style, with strong interpersonal skills; excellent work ethic.
  • Strong judgment and ability to make independent decisions when appropriate.
  • Demonstrated proficiency with Lexis-Nexis, Internet research, and Microsoft Office suite (MS Word, Outlook, and Excel).
  • J.D. required; member of Connecticut bar or member of any state bar and willingness to become admitted to Connecticut bar.
  • Able and willing to travel up to 10% of the time, or as needed.
