Job Description

Summary:

The Child Mind Institute (CMI) is seeking a Senior Backend/DevOps Engineer for Mindlogger, a platform that empowers clinicians, researchers, and educators to digitally deliver mental health assessments and interventions for children, teens, and young adults. This 20-month position will help CMI, through its partnership with California’s Department of Health Care Services (DHCS), build the next generation of the MindLogger platform. As part of CMI’s research team, our mission is to accelerate the pace of scientific innovation and discovery in mental health and learning, and help foster collaborations that can test, improve upon, and adopt innovative solutions for the benefit of every child.

The Senior Backend/DevOps Engineer will play a pivotal role in the evolution of the MindLogger platform, owning all evaluation and internal implementation of solutions on the backend. You will maintain a deep technical knowledge of the MindLogger platform and drive the transition of our DevOps processes and infrastructure from external vendors in-house. As an individual contributor, you’ll immerse yourself in our backend codebase and be responsible for driving architectural decisions while working collaboratively to amplify the performance, security, and accessibility of our APIs. Working closely with the Engineering Director and Senior Engineering Director, you will help define the strategy and vision for the product (10%), implement features on the backend system and manage DevOps processes and infrastructure (50%), and architect and design future features for external execution/implementation (40%).

Reporting to the Engineering Director for MindLogger this is a full-time, exempt position located in our NYC headquarters or California office. A hybrid schedule is possible.

The Child Mind Institute is proud to be named a Great Place to Work-Certified company! Our competitive compensation and benefits include medical insurance, 401(k), paid parental leave, dependent care, flexible work schedules, discounted tickets and entertainment perks programs. For more information about our benefits, please visit our employee benefits website.

Child Mind Institute is committed to creating an inclusive culture where all employees feel welcomed and valued.

Responsibilities:

  • Own MindLogger backend technical orchestration, ensuring optimal performance, security, and scalability while delivering new features and capabilities.
  • Architect, develop, and maintain efficient backend systems.
  • Manage and scale the backend API, including considerations for security, scale, and compliance with industry standards.
  • Be a technical leader to our existing development team of internal and external engineers.
  • This is a highly technical senior IC role; candidates should be prepared to be hands-on with code and systems while mentoring others.
  • Help lead existing DevOps Engineering to configure, standup, and optimize DevOps infrastructure (CI/CD, monitoring, alerting, etc).
  • Resolve production errors through root cause analysis.
  • Mentor and uplift non-technical staff; collaborate with cross-functional teams (including external resources) for tailored feature implementation.
  • Oversee backend planning; manage external engineering deliverables in collaboration with the Engineering Director.
  • Manage internal and external team communication; contribute to future backend and DevOps architectural designs.

Qualifications:

  • 8+ years of experience working with a production-level backend, with expertise in Python, AWS, and relational databases (PostgreSQL preferred).
  • 4+ years DevOps or infrastructure automation experience.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field.
  • Proficient in cloud environments (AWS, Azure or GCP), networking, and cybersecurity principles.
  • Strong problem-solving skills, with a focus on operational efficiency and automation.
  • Excellent communication skills, able to collaborate effectively with leaders and senior stakeholders and provide high-level support outside engineering as necessary.
  • Ability to adapt to and work between fast-paced prototype efforts and larger internal feature implementations.
  • A proactive approach to identifying and resolving challenges and enhancing system performance and security.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Master’s Degree in Computer Science or a related field is highly preferred.
