Purpose
This position is responsible for onsite coordination and oversight of environmental health and safety for all semiconductor research and development activities at the UT Austin Montopolis Research Center and PRC-MER. This candidate will establish the EHS culture at the future fabrication facilities, incorporate UT Austin's EHS programs, and ensure the facilities are in full compliance with all applicable EHS regulations (local, state, and federal) and requirements. Must be able to apply logical and/or scientific principles to define problems, collect data, establish facts, draw valid conclusions in controlled situations, and read and understand engineering plans and specifications. The following specific areas encompass the scope of responsibilities: laboratory research safety; industrial hygiene and occupational and construction safety; radiation safety; hazardous materials; emergency response; and environmental compliance including waste and storm water.
Responsibilities
  • Coordinate and perform environmental compliance activities for: storm water management, drinking water, waste water management, air emissions, petroleum storage tanks, and other regulatory inspections and sampling; and, inspect hazardous waste management program, including oversight of hazardous waste storage and disposal coordination with waste vendor.
  • Provide technical, regulatory and process guidance to address emerging EHS issues: Understanding of hazardous chemistries, exhaust ventilation, radiation sources, mechanical design, and classification of hazardous areas; Assist departmental subject matter experts with specific project work/safety reviews related to equipment sign-off, industrial hygiene, indoor air quality, respirator fit testing, and radiation producing devices; document assessments in departmental database; Strong knowledge of electrical power and control circuits, as well as safety interlock systems; Conduct job hazard assessments, perform workplace evaluations, implement corrective EHS actions, review new processes for EHS compliance, evaluate newly adopted machinery and complete chip fabrication tool sign-off; Conduct incident investigations, determine causal factors, document in database, and ensure corrective actions are completed; Facilitate EHS training in order to enhance EHS awareness for employees and contractors; Organize and facilitate site Safety Committee activities; Develop a fabrication facility EHS contractor management program.
  • Designated as the emergency coordinator for the facilities emergency response team (training, team participation, emergency equipment inventory, etc.). Respond to gas detection alarms, odor complaints, spills, and other emergencies. First on scene for emergency response and must coordinate emergency response with EHS management and AFD. On-call rotational requirement.
  • Coordinate and perform safety (environmental, chemical, radiological, hazardous materials) inspections and document in the UT HERD database; Conduct building walk-throughs. Drive University vehicles. Maintain acceptable driver rating as established in Policy: UTS157 Section 2.5.4.

Required Qualifications
College degree in engineering or science background including occupational safety, chemical engineering or chemistry, mechanical engineering, environmental science, health physics, and emergency response/management. At least 3-5+ years of relevant industry experience in semiconductor environmental engineering, safety engineering, or related experience and regulatory compliance practice. Specific experience performing emergency response/gas detection, handling projects, assuring EHS compliance and carrying out safety evaluations on semiconductor or related manufacturing equipment (SEMI S2, EU Machinery Directive, and other associated product safety standards).
Relevant education and experience may be substituted as appropriate.

Driving Required
This job requires a class "C" operator's driver's license. The applicant selected must provide a current three-year driving record from the current state of residence. If not currently a Texas resident, a Texas driver's license must be obtained within 30 days of becoming a Texas resident.
Salary Range
$65,000 + depending on qualifications

  • 40 Hour Work Week Schedule; Monday-Friday, 08:00 AM - 05:00 PM
