Northern Ecological Services is a full-service restoration and land management company based in Esko, MN. As people who both work and play outdoors, we are keenly aware that restoring and protecting our finite natural resources is of the utmost importance. We are proud to do our part and contribute towards this important effort.
Our crew hand picks seed from grasses, sedges, and flowers that are native to the area. Work locations vary and include wide open plots, woods, stream edges, and swamps. We process the seed using hand scalping screens and small machinery to sell to local companies and use on our native landscaping and restoration projects.
Job responsibilities include:
- Native and invasive plant identification with instruction
- Harvesting with scissors or gloves quickly and safely
- Hiking through woods, swamps, and rocky terrain while carrying supplies
- Cleaning equipment and storage space regularly
- Processing seed over screens and with small machinery
- Weighing, drying, and keeping record of species harvested
- Driving company vehicles
The ability to work as a team and independently with minimal supervision is important. Work involves repetitive motion, heavy lifting, and working on difficult terrain in and near water. Our job sites are woods and swamps where bees, ticks, and mosquitoes are abundant. Harvesting is weather dependent but be aware that we still work outdoors in adverse conditions.
We’re looking for self-motivated individuals who enjoy the outdoors to join our crew this summer. Typical work hours during the peak of the season are 7:30am-5pm Monday-Friday, which varies based on the time of year. As a seasonal position, work is expected to begin in July and end in January/February, depending on the year’s harvest. 3-4 day per week positions can also be available depending on the schedule.
Hourly starting wage is offered at $16-$17/hr, based on experience. Experience or education in plant identification, natural resources, or ecological restoration is preferred, but not required.
