Certified Protection Officer through the International Foundation of Protection Officers or the ability to obtain certification, OR Certification through the International Association of Healthcare Safety and Security or the ability to obtain certification
High School Diploma or GED
Job Description:
Under general supervision, provides administrative supervision of the Public Safety Officer program and performs general security functions for the security division of the Department of Public Safety.

Characteristic Duties and Responsibilities
  • Provides administrative supervision to merit security staff and student employees assigned to work unit. This includes making effective recommendations in the hiring, termination, discipline, evaluation, training, work assignment and checking of work for employees and applicants. Assigns overtime as appropriate.
  • This is a working supervisor position that also performs general security duties.
  • Responsible for payroll and scheduling of security staff; approves/denies leave requests; ensures that all necessary time sheets and corresponding documents are completed.
  • Attends departmental leadership meetings and provides relevant information to security staff.
  • Reviews and checks performance of assigned staff in order to maintain high standards of security service.
  • Provides basic security and protection over persons, the building, and property. Provides these safety and security services within the guidelines of federal, state, and local laws and policies of the university.
  • Provides basic security services at Mary Greeley Medical Center Emergency Department as part of service agreement.
  • Serves as a resource for all potential and/or present security related issues in MGMC and campus facilities.
  • Reviews security camera footage for safety and security incidents as needed or requested. Notifies management if any incidents are discovered. Accesses and retrieves information from security cameras when approved by management.
  • Processes and handles confidential information with discretion. Maintains strict confidentiality.
  • Patrols the ISU buildings and MGMC frequently to maintain a presence to prevent unauthorized activities, policy violations, thefts, and vandalism.
  • Conducts frequent inspections of the facility spaces throughout the work shift evaluating safety and security conditions.
  • Understands the normal functioning and operation of emergency and safety systems in the ISU Facilities and MGMC.
  • Responds to alarm activations and/or emergencies and takes appropriate action including requests for assistance or service as needed.
  • Learns and maintains extensive knowledge of the building rooms/spaces, their functionalities, and the allowed occupants. Builds relationships with occupants.
  • Observes and reports safety hazards.
  • Compiles a log of all issues and findings and provides recommendations for corrective actions.
  • Clears out and ensures lock down of facilities at building closing time.
  • Reports to work punctually and follows the required work schedule.
  • Completes duties and responsibilities in compliance with university and MGMC standards, policies, and guidelines and in support of the values and institutional goals of the university.
  • Provides exceptional customer service.
  • Assists with events and other activities happening in university facilities as needed.
  • Provides general security for university approved events on campus where certified police officers are not required.
  • Event support staff as needed.
  • Works tactfully with highly stressed individuals.
  • Provides exceptional customer service to all users and visitors at ISU and MGMC.
  • Check facilities to make sure they are secure and lock and unlock facilities as needed.
  • Provide SafeRides as needed and transport students from student medical center to hospital.
  • Respond to questions and calls from people in the community needing directions, vehicle and office unlocks or other services.
  • Roll fingerprints as needed for a variety of customers.
  • Traffic Direction and control as needed and requested by law enforcement.
  • Provided safety and security training as needed.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
• Knowledge of and ability to perform supervisory and personnel functions, and fiscal administration of the position.
• Knowledge of cardiopulmonary resuscitation and first aid.
• Knowledge of portable fire extinguishers and their locations.
• Knowledge of the geography of the campus to which assigned.
• Skill in operating portable radio devices.
• Ability to communicate effectively, both orally and in writing, with university personnel and the public.
• Ability to walk and climb stairs.
• Ability to work outside in extreme weather conditions.
• Ability to see and hear accurately in both day and nighttime conditions.
• Ability to comprehend numerous policies, procedures, concepts and to be able to respond using discretion and interpretive judgment based on general and specific policies.
• Ability to retain knowledge, information, and directions on an ongoing basis and communicate effectively with others.
• Ability to maintain accurate records.
• Ability to react appropriately in emergency situations.
