Open to the general public and any current Municipal employee.
This position is represented by the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302 and is subject to the provisions of the current agreement between the Municipality of Anchorage and the International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302.
DEPARTMENT: Solid Waste Services
HOURS OF WORK: Shifts Vary: 4/10's Shift; Monday thru Saturday
LOCATION: Various Locations: 15500 E Eagle River Loop Rd, Eagle River, AK; 1208 E 56th Ave, Anchorage, AK
This is a Seasonal Full-Time position and will last approximately six (6) months after the date of hire.

Example of Duties

Operate heavy equipment at the Central Transfer Station and the Anchorage Regional Landfill such as, but not limited to, loaders, dozers, articulating dump trucks, landfill compactors, graders, solid waste cranes, water trucks, leachate tractor/trailers and transfer tractor/trailers. Must be able to lift and carry 50 pounds.
Applicant must be able to lift/carry up to fifty (50) pounds occasionally and work in inclement weather.

Minimum Qualifications / Substitutions / Preferences

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and three (3) yearsof experience in the operation of solid waste transfer and disposal facilities.
OR

High school diploma, GED, or equivalent and three (3) years of experience in a related field, which includes the skilled operation of heavy motorized construction equipment, including at least two (2) of the following types: tractor trailers/tankers, front-end loaders, landfill compactors, bulldozers, graders, dump trucks, cherry pickers and backhoes


All applicants must possess and/or obtain:

  • A valid State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions, and satisfactory driving record at time hire. Applicants with a restriction of "L-Vehicles Without Air Brake Systems Only" and “E-Automatic Transmission Vehicles Only” are not eligible.

  • A satisfactory drug screening at time of hire.

Preferences:
Strongly prefer candidates with prior experience hauling waste from the Central Transfer Station to the Anchorage Regional Landfill.

Additional Important Information

Preference will be given to returning Seasonal Employees who are eligible for Recall. Recalled Seasonal Employees who are successful in the screening process will be forwarded to the department for consideration prior to any other applicants.

If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the submission of a current copy of the applicant's State of Alaska Class A Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with tanker endorsement, no airbrake or transmission restrictions. Also, required is the submission of a current copy (dated within 30 days from date requested) of his/her Department of Motor Vehicle driving record, including a driving record from previous states if the Alaska Driver's License was first issued within one year prior to application, documenting an acceptable driving history. If selected for hire, the appointment in this position will be conditional based upon a satisfactory Municipal Employment Office conducted background check. A background check encompasses criminal history, verifying education, and verifying dates of employment.
As a condition of employment, the person selected will be required to successfully complete a drug test prior to beginning work and will be subject to future periodic drug and alcohol tests on a random basis without advance notice.
If selected for hire, appointment in this position will be conditional based upon the satisfactory review and completion of the Previous Employer Alcohol & Drug Test Information Forms. Names, addresses, and phone numbers for positions that required Department of Transportation testing for the last two years will be required in compliance with § 40.25 and § 382.405(f) and (h).
As a condition of employment, the person selected must provide a International Union of Operating Engineers - Local 302 Dispatch Referral Form by the time of hire.
All required certifications and licenses must remain current for the duration of employment.
Military Service Interview Preference:
Veterans or who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach to the application a copy of their DD Form 214, DD Form 256, NGB Form 22, or a letter from the US Department of Veterans Affairs recognizing the person as a veteran. The attached documentation must show an honorable discharge or general (under honorable conditions) discharge. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
Individuals currently serving as a member in good standing in the National Guard or the organized military reserves who wish to be considered for interview preference as permitted in Municipal Personnel Rules 3.30.031 D must attach proof of current service to the application. Proof of current service can be shown by submission of a statement of service which, at a minimum, shows full name, date of birth, Social Security Number, date service began, branch of service, rank, name of command providing the information, and unit of assignment. The statement of service must be on a form or letterhead of the individual’s command organization and show the name, signature, title and contact information for the signer providing the statement of service. The minimum qualifications of the position must be met for preference consideration.
