Job Description

JOB SUMMARY

Under the Supervision of the Recreation and Community Inclusion Coordinator, the Recreation Leader will perform duties pertaining to the operations of the Recreation Programs and working with vulnerable populations 5 years to 17 years of age. Responsible for ensuring a fun-filled, healthy, structured, and comfortable environment for all. These positions assist in the planning and implementation of scheduled activities with a strong emphasis on the safety and welfare of participants and the public. An employee of this class may be required to perform a variety of administrative and record keeping duties and has extensive public contact. They may also be required to do some janitorial work, set up and take down related to the operation of the Recreation Programs.

KEY FUNCTIONS/KNOWLEDGE/SKILLS:

  • Initiates, organizes, and carries out a variety of recreation activities.
  • Assist in the planning and coordination of special events and trips.
  • Directs arts and crafts, sports, games, drama, music, dance, and other camp activities.
  • Communicates with supervisory program staff regarding participant behavior, injuries, and other relevant matters.
  • Renders routine first aid for minor injuries.
  • Attends mandatory weekly meetings.
  • Assures that all equipment and facilities are safely and properly prepared and maintained.
  • Keeps work environment clean and organized.
  • The habitual and judicious use of communications, knowledge, technical skills, reasoning, emotions, values, and reflections daily for the benefit of those being served.
  • Facilitate the movement of a group toward a common goal in a fun and inspirational way.
  • Ability to generate ideas quickly, alternatives, or possibilities that may be useful in solving problems, communicating with others and entertaining others.
  • Facilitate learning skills through fun and action, a person-centered approach, handle difficulties with others effectively, encourage, praise, and recognize successes, and adapt or modify for different skill sets and ability levels.

Education and Experience

High school or GED.

One (1) yr. related experience in sports and recreation activities.

Must be at least eighteen (18) years old and be able to work an open schedule.

Special Certifications and License

Valid Texas Driver’s License

American Red Cross First Aid & Safety Community CPR or CPR for the Professional.

Independence and Judgement

Minimal judgment; instructions, once established and defined, normally allow the job to be accomplished without direct and/or constant supervision; mostly routine work requiring that employee recognize obvious problems; situations outside the instructions are referred to the supervisor or lead worker.

Initiative and Ingenuity

Low chance for error because work is routine/repetitive/simple/reviewed carefully; standard procedures: not demanded to come up with creative solutions; refers anything unusual to supervisor.

Supervisory and Responsibility

Does not supervise.

Financial Responsibility

Does not deal with money.

Level and Frequency of Outside Contacts

Frequent contact with the public or other organizations; interactions may require obtaining cooperation of people; courtesy and tact are required when dealing with moderately difficult or sensitive issues.

Physical Demands

Light physical effort such as standing, lifting, moving, pulling, pushing, etc. Ability to exert up to 20lbs. of force occasionally to move objects.

Responsibility for Equipment and Property

Responsible for assigned equipment/property used outside of office; use of a City vehicle.

Working Conditions

Fair inside or outside conditions; exposure to disagreeable conditions is brief or otherwise insignificant; space problems; only occasional situations that place the employee in a stressful environment.

Other Requirements

The City of Brownsville requires all employees to successfully pass a Drug & Alcohol and a physical examination and a Background Check.
