This is skilled craft work in the maintenance and operation of public swimming pools and fountains. The work requires knowledge of the techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of pool electrical and mechanical equipment which involves the use of specialized equipment and skills and is learned on the job or through specialized training. Contacts with others require basic courtesy, tact, and effectiveness in dealing with others, including contacts to request or provide information, ask questions, or obtain clarification. The work is semi-routine in that tasks are covered by procedures or precedents, but some latitude is permitted to consider the most appropriate method, technique, or procedure to follow. The work is performed primarily outdoors where there are some risks and hazards, but they are known, predictable, and controllable. Operates a computer and hand tools associated with the maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment, public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems and pumps. Operates motor vehicles. The work involves moderate physical activity and demands which may involve lifting or moving objects weighing more than 50 pounds, working at heights more than five feet above the ground, and handling hazardous chemicals. The work is performed under general supervision where the work assignments are subject to instructions and established work routines, and the worker is given latitude to rearrange the sequence based on changing work situations, or workflow.

- Conducts daily inspections of pool water for proper chemical balances, bacteria levels, and pH; conducts chemical tests of water; apply chemicals as appropriate to maintain proper pH and chemistry levels; assure safety of pool water; test temperature of heated pool water.
- Cleans and maintains the swimming pool, surrounding areas and related equipment on a regular basis; brush and vacuum pools, hose down surrounding decks and backwash filters for water clarity; clear pool drains, gutters, and deck drains.
- Maintains daily records related to pool maintenance, pool repairs, safety incidents, water test results and other assigned activities.
- Diagnoses and communicates needed repairs and maintains public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, pumps, and playground equipment.
- Maintains manual and/ or automated records and prepares reports.
- Picks up trash and cleans public swimming pools, restrooms, and facility areas.
- Transport and stores hazardous chemicals.
- Operates and inspects tools and equipment and makes minor adjustments and repairs.
- Operates vehicles to transport various types of materials and equipment.
- Operates a computer to input and retrieve data.
- Demonstrates proficiency in the City of Jacksonville's competencies.
- Performs related work as required.
- Knowledge of techniques, methods, and procedures used in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment associated with public swimming pools, water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Knowledge of basic electrical theory.
- Knowledge of occupational hazards and safety procedures associated with the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment found at public swimming pools, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Knowledge of tools and equipment used in the maintenance and operation of electrical and mechanical equipment found at public swimming pools, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Ability to diagnose needed repairs and maintain electrical and mechanical equipment found at public swimming pools, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Ability to operate tools and equipment used in the repair and maintenance of electrical and mechanical equipment found at public swimming pools, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps.
- Ability to operate assigned vehicles.
- Ability to prepare and/or oversee the preparation of manual and/ or automated records and reports.
- Ability to read and understand technical manuals and regulatory requirements.
- Ability to operate a computer to input and retrieve data.
- Ability to perform mathematical calculations including calculating volume and square footage.
- Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
- Ability to lift or move objects weighing more than 50 pounds.
- One year of education and/or experience in the maintenance and operation of mechanical equipment, including water systems, filter systems, and pumps
- A valid driver's license is required prior to appointment and must be maintained during employment in this class.
- Must qualify for prior to appointment, obtain, and maintain during employment in this class a City of Jacksonville certification as a public driver.
